For that price range you could get a brand new S&W MP, Springfiled XD as well as others. Go handle some pistols, rent some, and see which works best for you.

Is the 228 for $550 a good price?

That's not bad. You can check prices on sigforum.com. I've seen them go for more. Hard to say without seeing it in person. I'm bias as I have a P229R and a P239 both in .40.
