  • DoubleTap Penetration and expansion of various calibers.

All of these tests were done using 10% ballistic gelatin provided by Vyse gelatin using all FBI protocols and 4 layers of denim and two layers of light cotton T-shirt in front of the gelatin.

For those of you not familiar with DoubleTap, they are one of the few ammunition manufacturers that loads all of their rounds to nuclear/SAAMI limits. Almost all of these are max charges and the very limits of what is achievable without losing a hand. Some of those numbers are pretty impressive. Especially the 10mm showing 61% expansion on the 165gr, and 19.5" of penetration on the 200gr XTP - wow.

Holy crap. I wonder what powder they are using to get 1250fps from the 200gr XTP. Did they specify what barrel length they were using?
Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

Their 135gr 10mm load is identical to mine, I had almost the exact same ballistic data. And it goes off like a grenade @ 1600fps. When I got it up above 1700fps it started to explode in the air, and I would get a peppered target. It would probably stay together with a bonded bullet.

They didn't include .44 Mag because it would have embarrassed the 10mm.

The mere fact you have to use a .44 mag as the only comparable cartridge speaks leaps and bounds about the effectiveness of the 10mm.

              .45 Super should be comparable.

Those .45 loads are loaded to typical .45 super velocities. Looks to be about 6% less than .45 super, but essentially it's the same.

                Ballistic performance .45 Super
                Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
                185 gr (12.0 g) JHP 1,300 ft/s (400 m/s) 694 ft·lbf (941 J)
                200 gr (13 g) JHP 1,200 ft/s (370 m/s) 639 ft·lbf (866 J)
                230 gr (15 g) FMJ 1,100 ft/s (340 m/s) 618 ft·lbf (838 J)
                Test barrel length: 5 inches
but regardless, I'm in the process of converting my .45 Witness compact to .45 Super. There are guys on CZFirearms.us getting a 200 Gr LSWC to 1350 fps...fucking insanity.

Still trying to justify an old, outdated and abandoned cartridge?

Did 10mm touch you? 10mm was created for the FBI because 9mm wasn't powerful enough. What they got was a cartridge that was too powerful for them. Just because the FBI's limp wristed agents needed a short and weak version - the .40S&W - doesn't mean anything was wrong with the 10mm. Nothing is old, outdated, or abandoned. As a matter of fact, it's the newest cartridge of all of the ones tested in that article.

Are you talking about .44 Magnum or 10mm?

I'm just giving you shit about the only modern cartridge that has seemingly fell off the face of the earth. The 10mm seemingly went out in a blaze of glory leaving little availabilty or support. Sure, it's still out there, but how prevalent? Just because it's the newest cartridge doesn't mean it's the most popular. I wished I could find stats on gun sales by caliber by year.

The more I think about it, why is the .44 Mag intentionally left out of that test? I'll say it's because it would shame the 10mm. The Doubletap .44 Mag 200 gn HP is running 1625 fps out of a 7.5" barrel.

How about 45 GAP, 41 Action Express, or 9x23 Winchester? Those are the three that I can come up with right off the top of my head, all developed after the 10mm Auto.

It's left out because the .44 mag is not a concealable cartridge. Who uses it for concealed carry? This was a self defense test, denim, cotton clothing, penetration... all of this is applicable to concealed carry.
