  • Christmas gift

Just picked up a christmas gift for my 10 year old nephew. His dad is a real POS and will never get him his first gun. May have to get him a couple of plinking targets next.

Not to say way to go, but I have to share a story of a guy who's land I've hunted. He as the father was never a gun guy. His step son recieved I forget the size gun from his real father. While they where out the kid accidently shot his 17 year old stepbrother in the chest. Dead before he got to the hospital.

Teach them gun safety and lock it up. Ammo sepperate locked up. Trigger guard. Anything it takes.

BTW the child who pulled the trigger was 10 as well.

      Sad story.

Just to be clear though, the 10 year old was carrying/shooting a loaded weapon, with a 17 year old, and an adult that isn't into guns as supervision. Not that your suggestions aren't valid, but if that's the case, a gun lock wouldn't have prevented anything.

It is a sad story the 17 year old didn't know anythings about guns. Never even shot one before.

          Educate! Educate! Educate!

That said, I wouldn't leave the gun with the family.

Teach him proper firearms handling and familiarity long before putting a round in the chamber and letting him pull the trigger. Teach him fundimentals first as you would with anything.

Gotta agree. If the dad is a POS the gun would probably end up in a pawn shop.

                Cool gift though.

My sons are now 9 and 13, and have had their own rifles since they were 6 and 10. The youngest has a 10-22, the oldest a .17hmr. They can both recite the gun safety rules, have their patches in Scouts, and can shoot pretty well for their ages. Heck, my youngest, at Scout camp just last month, hit paper with every shot, using those crappy little spring powered Daisys. The instructor guy was like Dayum!

It is absolutely about education. I'm very proud of my little guys and the examples that they set when around their peers.

                  And good gift!

He has been taught gun safety just Like I was since he was old enuff to understand it. He is even taught it and it is enforced with his toy guns. His mom, my sis, is divorced and his dad is a real POS. Last year they got a small gun safe from me and my dad for christmas. He is only allowed to take his guns out with me, my dad, or his uncle on his dads side. He is a good kid and when it comes to guns he only does what he is allowed to. He has alot of respect for it and likes shootin to much to risk havin it taken away.

Theres some sad stories here and hate that it happened. I feel for the families that lost their youngins to lack of firearm safety and edjucation.
