  • Question regarding Sig Mosquito...

So I bought one for my fiancée at the Dallas Market Hall show about a week ago this past weekend, brand new and everything.

Well she has been begging to shoot it and asking if we can go to the range and what not so this past Saturday we head up to Bass Pro (it was raining) to shoot and while I am there I pick up a couple of boxes of ammo. I think it was Winchester Super 'X' (red box, slide top with 100 rounds).

Anyways, we shoot the first mag (10rds) and I go to shoot another and the damn slide stops ejecting the shells, and it just overall becomes a one shot, load, one shot type gun. I figure it has become dirty and the buildup is preventing the casing from ejecting smoothly hence no blow back on the slide. I took it home and cleaned the shit out of it and hopefully this weekend will be better.

Now, my questions...When purchasing a new gun is there any “pre-fire” work that has to be done or just load it up and start blasting away? I only ask because I figure with a good quality gun I should not have experienced this issue and I am thinking maybe I missed something. You know, cleaning, maybe it's the ammo seeing as they lead has no jacket...

    Any ideas?

Sig Mosquitos are well known for their problems with different .22 ammos. Most will only shoot expensive CCI .22LR. That's the reason I tell people to avoid them. They can be really picky. I would try shooting some plated .22 like federal or the pricier brands. I know Scott and Matt have Mosquitos, maybe they can help you out.

I have one that is about 2 years old I bought for my wife (bought it brand new). I only shoot CCI mini mags through it, as anything else does not feed reliably. Even the CCI mini mags will have a feeding problem at least once per mag when it is new. I have put several thousand rounds through it and after about the first 1000 it started to become less finicky, but CCI mini mags are still the most reliable. I have finally gotten it to the point with the mini mags that it is feeding relatively well, but it still has problems now and then.

Best advice I can give you is to thouroughly clean it and take a boresnake, rag, and oil with you to the range and wipe it down every 200 or so rounds.

They may FTF or FTE more often than other guns, but they make damn good training tools. My wife learned real quick how to clear a failure from a semi auto.

My best advice would be to get a P22, Ruger MKII/III, or S&W 22a I do understand the draw to the Mosquito, it's a full frame gun, which is nice. It's a shame it has so many problems. Some people get Mosquitos that have no problems at all, but it seems the majority have issues. If a .22 can't shoot the cheapest shit I have then I probably don't want it.

I freaked her ass out when we had one not fire when struck by the pin...yeah I hate those because there is no where to put them at Bass Pro. (looking for metal box, not rubber trash can)

I had the same feeding issues out of my P22 so I got rid of it and got a SIG/GSG 1911 .22

22's regularly have duds because of the rimfire manufacturing process.

P22's are seeming to go to shit as of late. I've been hearing about a lot more problems lately with them. The most dependable .22 pistol I have ever fired is my S&W 22a. That thing NEVER jams, and it's accurate as hell. And, they are dirt cheap and SUPER easy to clean - you just pull the trigger guard and the barrel comes off.

They come in all different colors, sizes, and flavors:

The fuck? A reproduction glock with a safety in .22LR with threaded barrel? ....

Looks like it comes threaded metric (wtf) but they will send you a free adapter. Some guys report getting them as cheap as $250. This is very interesting and I bet it's light as shit.

My cousin's sig mosquito runs 100% with a suppressor on it.

When it comes to 22s though, I strongly recommend the Colt Woodsman. IMO, it is the best 22lr pistol ever made.

Spray paint a brick matte black.
                          Stencil on "Tactical Brick".
                          Throw it at your target.

You saved several hundred dollars, spent $0.52, and accomplished the original task of getting something stupid.

Yeah it is just a small mental block having to pick that casing up and throw it away...I imagine losing a thumb or worse
