They are made in Brazil, and they don't have a pony on them.

Well, I had an interesting day at the range last week where I shoot quite often, using 3" and 6" Big Burst targets pasted on the back of a B-27 target. I was shooting my .22 Buck Mark Camper for warmup at 7-10 yards and having an accurate day (many several sub 1" to 1.5" groups with just less than 1 second interval).

Once warmed up I shifted to shooting DA with the Taurus loaded with factory Blazer Brass .38 Specials. Fired a total of 30 rounds. Once again, nice accuracy (about 2"x2") at 10 yards. Loaded factory Blazer Brass .357 mags, checked that the bullets seated fully and naturally (no burn ring hangups), and started DA shooting again. I was amazed that I was spraying bullets 3-4" left and 3-4" above and below center. I concentrated on my grip and recoil anticipation (I'm a southpaw), reloaded and the groupings got a little better, but not much. Then the cylinder completely hung up with one unfired round remaining. It would not turn it, it would not open. I notified the RO of the situation, told him I was going to continue firing the .22 until the Taurus cooled and then try to open it. He agreed.

I fired the .22 for about another 30-45 minutes (100 rounds). The Taurus opened then with a little difficulty. I closed it and opened it several times trying to see what the problem was, but it opened and closed easily after getting it open. I emptied the cylinder, DA dry fired several times, loaded empty .38 and .357 casings and DA dry fired again. Absolutely no problems.

I loaded 7 .38s and fired them DA, no problem except they were impacting about 2" to the left and low when previously they had been center grouped. I loaded 7 .357s. The first round impacted in the previous grouping, then the next three impacts started walking further down to the 7:30 position, reaching 6" off center. The last cartridge fired wouldn't advance DA, but did SA. When I pulled the trigger, the barrel went flying downrange and the bullet impact was 20" down at the 7:30 position.

I counted my fingers, looked at the shortest snub-nosed pistol ever held, then started laughing. I unloaded the remaining rounds and notified the RO. He called a cease fire, retrieved the barrel, said he'd never seen anything like that, then told me he was selling his Taurus the next day. I had fired a total of 32 .357s. at the point of failure.

The gun was purchased in 2003 and has been impeccably maintained. I'll ship it back to Taurus for the second time on their lifetime warranty. The first time I shipped it to them was due to timing issues (it was shaving bullets). Lets see what happens this time.

And I'm a big fan too.
Bought this Jan 17th from Buds. Picked it up a week later at Cabs near me.
Brought it home, cleaned it and the cylinder had a hard time closing. The hammer, trigger and cylinder would lock up tight.
After 3 dry fires, the hammer broke.
Sent it back two weeks ago, it came back today with a new hammer.

Same probs as before except this time the entire cylinder fell off.

I have never fired this gun.
        Back it goes tomorrow.
        Taurus 651 Protector, .357 Stainless, 2".

First time out firing my new Taurus .45. Gun blew up on the third magazine. Using standard Remington ammo, nothing special. It's amazing any Brazilian gun enthusiasts have any hands.

Again, lack of consistency. Sometimes the guns work great. Sometimes they kill you.

Kimber might have fitment issues or aesthetic complaints, but their guns don't explode. I have personally witnessed a Taurus PT145 explode in someone hands. I have also have one that fired occasionally. And I've also fired at one before.

But, give their problems they do have some very nice price points. I've actually been looking for a Raging Bull in .454 Casull w/ a 10" barrel. Primarily because you can find them for around $450-500 and that appeals to me. I have a habit of buying something too pretty to actually use. So $450 for a gun is great, I won't feel guilty when I beat the shit out of it.

edit: hopefully it won't kill me. Because that's one big boom bitch if it does.

Maybe we can hook up one day and you can shoot mine. Catch me at the right time and you might take it home with a gazillion cases and odd components (ask tony lol).

Ergonomically it is wonderful, when it first came out it was a wonderful change from the crappy old colt and smith designs. And for what it's worth, I had a FA 454 break on me, they aren't the be-all-end-all. However there is no doubt that the bull platform is inconsistent.

I have the bull, but yes I broke a freedom arms. It isn't unusual, the ejector mechanism went flying off. That is a downside of that antiquated SA design, blackhawks do that too.

Have you tried KimPro Tac Mags.....Kimbers aftermarket mags?

They are what solved the problem on my last 1911.

I haven't even had a chance to shoot it since heavily oiling everything. If I do (hopefully this weekend), and the problem persists, new mags are at the top of my xmas list.

Anyone have thoughts about Wilson versus KimpPro? If I buy, I'll probably have to order, and I'd rather not have to deal with returning anything. If I were in DFW I wouln't have an issue meeting up with someone to try theirs in my gun, but out here I'd have to find a complete stranger. Not un-doable, perhaps the guy that sold me the McCormick has others that he'd let me test with.

Aaron, I have several of each brand mag. The Wilson would be my choice.

Another vote for Wilson here. I've had a few different brands of 1911 magazines over the years and I absolutely love the silky smoothness of loading Wilson mags. Well worth the money.
