  • Issues with 1911...

The gun has 300+/- rounds through it at this point, is that "broken in?" I ask because I am still getting the random FTF where the slide will stop with the round halfway or more chambered. It isn't stuck, I can easily manually push the slide all the way forward, and then it shoots fine. Is this user error (I don't limp-wrist it), cheap range ammo, or an issue with the feed ramp/magazine fit perhaps? It's happened with both the Kimber mag and my aftermarket mag if that matters.

Also, a bit more rarely, the slide will lock open as when after firing the last round, even though the magazine isn't empty yet. Again, it happens with both brand mags. What are the possible causes of this?

<--- in before Adam's obligatory "Kimbers suck, should have bought an STI" post

Have you cleaned it recently before you shot it? If you cock the hammer and then rack the slide, is it smooth from battery all the way back?

What kind of ammo are you shooting?

I wouldn't kick you while youre down like that.

      Quit limp wristing it.

Was it a new gun? I'd sent it back to Kimber and make them fix it if you haven't modified anything.

Good luck with kimber customer service.

I would let someone at the local range shoot it to eliminate the user error.

Cleaned and oiled after the last shoot, the ammo is Magtech 230 grain ball ammo.

I wasn't. If it matters, my Glock performed flawlessly.

Yeah, I bought it new, but I wanted to get a better idea as to what is going on before pointing fingers. If has to do with me or the cheap ammo in whatever way, there's nothing for Kimber to fix.

I'd rather try better ammo, and get opinions first. It happens rarely enough, that running through a mag or 3 wouldn't be enough, and I don't care to buy someone 50 rounds of ammo at this point. If it is me, I'd prefer to shoot the box myself for practice.

Damn, I would be pissed off if I bought a thousand dollar gun and it had any kind of hiccups a mere 300 rounds in.

That's pretty sad for the money they charge for their guns.

I didn't say "let someone take it to thunder ranch for a three day course". Let someone who shoots more than you put a couple of magazines through it. It's not like you're letting someone fuck your girlfriend, it's troubleshooting.

Try some winchester whitebox 230g fmj. If the gun won't run with that, it won't run with anything.

Take it apart, check the frame/slide for proper lubrication. If the oil is tacky, it can be slowing the slide down, if there isn't enough oil, it could be slowing the slide down.

Look at the guide rod, is there any obvious galling?

I don't care if someone shoots it, my point is that I can go through most of a box of 50 without incident, so someone more experienced doing the same does nothing other than spend my ammo.

I pulled it apart and the guide rod is flawless, though the slide and frame looked to be a touch dry. I lubed it up, and will go put some more rounds through it tomorrow. Hopefully that's it, and I'll chalk it up to a lesson in checking my guns after sitting for a bit.

What about the slide locking back with ammo in the mag though? Could the dry slide have contributed to that as well?

Does it do it if you shoot one handed?

I'll try it tomorrow (later today), and see what happens.

Why assume it's the firearm, and not the user maintenance / shooting technique? I would be the FIRST to complain if my Kimber had any problems.

And FWIW my Bill Wilson had a few FTF the first time out. It must be a piece of shit...

On the Kimber that I have, the manual said 500 rounds to break it in. 1911s like to run wetter then usual as well.
