Ultimately, criminals are predators and they prey on the weakest of the herd. If you don't look like a good target, the chances of them moving on are very high. When someone puts the time in to learn to fight, they learn a lot about themselves, and it shows in the way they carry themselves down the street. You would be surprised at how much your body language says about you to everyone who cares enough to pay attention.

To the OP, get a blade that fits within the legal limits and learn to use it like your life depends on it. Using a short blunt weapon in times of duress is a mistake for most people, IMO. Knives cut flesh, and everyone knows it. If an attacker willingly engages you with a knife, then he is hell bent on doing you harm. The same cannot be said for a flashlight. A knife will do damage anywhere it is employed, and can be utilized in very tight confines with a lot of success.

That thing almost came in handy several times walking home from the subway station at 4 AM. Luckily I never had to use it.

          Thanks again Adam.
I'm glad it worked out for you. Walking around like a victim is not a good option. Chicago is a shit hole, and I choose to avoid it altogether.

Just carry around a 5-D cell Maglite. It's just a billy club that happens to also function as a flash light. However, any decent Tactical LED light is bright enough to be disorienting. My cheap little Nebo Redline is pretty bright.

                    No shit!

I told Adam if I ever had to fight someone his size, I'd just shoot him.

At my age, size would have nothing to do with it. I'll shoot any of 'em.

I carry this everyday. When every hit you make cuts to the bone your opponent will get the point really quick.

Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

Chicago is actually a nice city to visit, but there's no way I would want to live there again while there is no concealed carry law in effect.

Body language is the number one theft deterrent in Chicago. I can tell you from experience that the way you carry yourself in the city is the most important thing. I carried the knife for the crazies who didn't give a fuck if you were 5 feet tall or 50 feet tall, because if they wanted to attack you they were going to. But those people live everywhere, they are just at a higher concentration in Chicago.

I believe i know how to fight and or defend myself...probably not as good as SEB but decent enough. And i think i carry myself to not become a target.
