  • .327 Federal Magnum

I was checking out an online catalog for CDNN and came across some Taurus revolvers chambered in this caliber. Never heard of it before and did some reading up on it this weekend. Fairly new caliber, think it's only been out a couple of years. Sometimes to have similar ballistics to a .357 Magnum with typically a 1 round higher capacity and lower recoil. Anyone familiar with this caliber? Saw a few defensive rounds available but I'm sure I'll never see it at my local Walmart anytime soon.

If you want a revolver with 7 rounds just get a Smith and Wesson 686+, comes in several lengths and in a caliber (.357mag) that is much more common

I think it's main appeal was supposed to be 6 rounds in a J-frame sized revolver vs 5 rounds of .38/.357 with less recoil. It doesn't seem like it really caught on. I don't think it's going away but doubt it will ever be as popular as the .38/.357 Mag.

It's another updated and improved version of the .32 S&W family of cartriges including the .32 S&W, .32 S&W Long, and .32 H&R Magnum. The .32 H&R Magnum wasn't really loaded to a high pressure like other modern magnums so the .327 Federal Magnum was created.

I don't have any experience with the .327 but I do shoot a .32 H&R Magnum Ruger Single Six. I've seen ammo for the .327 at places like Cabelas but not Walmart or Academy when looking for H&R Mag ammo. It's usually limited to self defense type ammo and is expensive.

This article is a few years old, but very well written.
Seems like a nice round, especially for a lady or someone with small hands. A .357 magnum can be quite a handfull for some and this round seems to be fine for somone not wanting a big fire tree5seven.

I've got one. Need to actually send it in to Taurus, if that says anything. The 2" barrel makes it one snappy son of a bitch, but it is my favorite gun to shoot.

agreed. it might just be me but i like common rounds.

although i will say i'm going to break that precedent that for 3 specific rounds in the near future.

I want to get a .327 Federal SP101 for carry, or a GP100 for general shooting. Maybe both. I don't expect it to replace .357 Magnum but I don't care as long as brass and bullets are available for both of them.

If I ever get it sent off to taurus and repaired, I'll gladly let you shoot it Tony and Hozay.

Of course, that privilege does not go without some sort of compensation. Payment in the form of sis/cousin pics will be acceptable.

Nah, I have a long trend of buying guns without having previously fired them. No need to break it now!

The sailing point is that you can shoot .327 Federal with .357 Magnum power and recoil that's closer to .38 Special

I guess let me begin by saying that I am in no way serious about buying a handgun chambered in this caliber any time soon. Just thought it was interesting to see a (somewhat) new development in handgun caliber particularly one aimed specifically at revolvers.

What's going on with your Taurus and what model is it? Never had an issue with my M85 in .38 Special and was just curious. Never had a problem with a Taurus except for a PT908 that absolutely hated aluminum case ammo.
