Forgot to add, I never saw a "bolt action" requirement. So why not a Marlin 30-30?
1. Wood stock, not glossy, would like something with a nice looking grain I'm ok with laminate too: Check
2. leaning towards 30.06, but open to other common calibers: Check, VERY common
3. Under a $1000 (not including optics, already have an extra VX-1 I can use): Check, WAY under $1000
4. Prefer stainless, but can live with blued: You can find them in stainless
5. No Junk: Its not
6. Don't want a 700, nothing against them I've just already had one and want to try something different this time: Definitely not an R700

I ended up buying the tikka this afternoon. I wanted wood, but I was not set on it. Ended up with the synthetic.
The tikka hunter series would be the best bang for your buck, but I was never able to check out the icon by Thompson center. On paper and looks I'm surprised its not in stock anywhere around me. I checked 4 cabellas and 6 scheels . Scheels has some awesome Fluted wood tikka just not in .308
