You can spend less than Vanguard money and get a better rifle. Don't make me recommend a Savage in 7mm-08 again. Because I'll do it. Fancy, less accurate rifles for more money than my one-holing ugly stick? No thank you.
ZOMBIE REAGAN FOR PRESIDENT 2016!!! heh

I love my Tikka T3. 7mm mag. I've only shot it a few times to sight it in, but its got a nice bolt on it, and its light as hell. Tikka is also made by Beretta. I dunno why anyone would bash that. I'll let you know how it performs after I go buck hunting with it, and possibly Elk as well.

Owned by Beretta, not made by them. Tikka is made by Sako.

Doesn't have to be in a Wby caliber. The Vanguard has one of the widest caliber selections I've seen from the factory, even compared to the R700. But yes, you can have a equivalent performing rifle for less but I personally really like the feel of the Vanguard's action. To each their own.

The 7mm-08 Savage is a great rifle. I think my next rifle will be the 11LWH in 7mm-08 or in .243, not quite sure yet. And I don't know where you're getting less accurate from either. The Savage is synthetic stock, so if we're gonna go that route the Vanguard 2 is guaranteed sub MOA out of the box and $489 MSRP. The price doesn't jump on those until you start going for the wood stocks (which are beautiful) or the Mark V

Forgot to add, I never saw a "bolt action" requirement. So why not a Marlin 30-30?

            1. Wood stock, not glossy, would like something with a nice looking grain I'm ok with laminate too: Check
            2. leaning towards 30.06, but open to other common calibers: Check, VERY common
            3. Under a $1000 (not including optics, already have an extra VX-1 I can use): Check, WAY under $1000
            4. Prefer stainless, but can live with blued: You can find them in stainless
            5. No Junk: Its not
            6. Don't want a 700, nothing against them I've just already had one and want to try something different this time: Definitely not an R700

I ended up buying the tikka this afternoon. I wanted wood, but I was not set on it. Ended up with the synthetic.

The tikka hunter series would be the best bang for your buck, but I was never able to check out the icon by Thompson center. On paper and looks I'm surprised its not in stock anywhere around me. I checked 4 cabellas and 6 scheels . Scheels has some awesome Fluted wood tikka just not in .308

Narrowed it down to the Tikka and the T/C, decided to go ahead and order a T/C Icon 30-06 with the Field grade walnut stock.
