    As a youth, I always shot a 30.06 and it never really bothered me. I now shoot a 270 which is what I like best. Having said this, I don't think a 270 is too much really. Especially if he is hunting big game, deer etc. My boys have shot my 270's since they were 10/12 years old. You can always use a smaller load and a good recoil pad.

    I'm just not a fan of the smaller caliber rifles. I hate to wound a deer with the smaller rifles where they will die some days later. Not a good way to start deer hunting. Remember this...deer hunting, he only needs 1 shot. Its not like he is shooting clays all afternoon.

    If not...a 243 would be my next, but not favorite choice.

      I have an H&R for sale if needed. .223 single shot. Bushnell scope. Like new.

        If you are going to take him hunting, make sure his gun can kill whatever he shoots at. He doesn't need to be running around the woods spending 5 hours tracking a wounded pig. .50 Beowulf should do the trick.
