  • Pistol shooting at long range, DFW ranges open to this?

I would like to do some work on the 454, and would like a place that has no issue with a hunting bullet (not FMJ) on a longer range.

I have no problem workign around hunting season so that I may be the only one on a given rifle range, or at the very least not spraying cylinder gap blast onto the next carrel.

And I have no issue starting short to make sure the scope is where I want to start. But most pistol ranges, even outdoors, stop at 25yds.

I would like to work up to 200, and won't bother getting there unless i am very confident at shorter ranges. I used to shoot IHMSA, and paper plates at 50, 100, 150 & 200 are what I am looking for. basically range fun with practical hunting distances. Safe and sane, as i have mentioned before, is my motto. I've never been yanked from a range for being a dumbass, and don't intend to ever go there. If a range officer tells me I can't do something, I may grumble later but they are the law in my book. No issues there.

From the mid-cities, would like to find something close, and even a private ranch with a small fee and strict rules would be fine. Hell, just a place to chrono things into a brush-pile would be nice. I'm not a big milspec guy or anything, so consider me more into "traditional" calibers and platforms, like straightwall wheelgun or 30-30 and/or equivalent in a rifle. Maybe patterning a shotgun (and carting off any leftover shredded cardboard, "leave it as clean as you found it").

It doesn't sound like what you are really looking for but FYI Alpine has always allowed me to shoot handguns on the 50 yard range, never tried on the 100.

That is the one north of FW on 35W?

I used to shoot there quite abit. No trouble whatsoever, and I felt that I had a good rapport with the bearded guy who was the range officer. After a few visits he knew what i was up to and I basically would tell him I was ready to move over to the rifle sight-in (50yd) and he would make a cursory glance and nod his head. My goal was to keep them on paper before moving up. I moved to the 100 a couple times, was disappointed but both times I had no-one else shooting.

Then some guy took his place. He criticized me from the get-go. When I was ready to move he actually mocked me and told me I should go back to the internet. I tried once more and that time he had to look over my rounds "because we don't allow FMJ" (a 454 with cast hunting bullets, for chrissake).

It rubbed me so raw I swore them off, if that is the same range (the one with the little wooden bridge across the creek?). And honestly, if a range officer told me that the rifle range was a little too crowded or something, it would have been no problem. Anything other than his condescending tone that "real hunters use rifles" (IHMSA comp was the goal, the dumbass). He kept berating Taurus too, which, while deserved in some cases, really mattered not in this situation. Maybe I took it too personally, i dunno, but it pissed me off twice.

I'm at a private range, but I was shooting targets at 200yds with my Python last weekend.

Alpine is on south of Ft. Worth, off of 820, in Everman. The 50 yd range only has 6 slots, so it's sometimes a little bit of a wait. Supposed to be an hour time limit on it.

Okay then i think the range i am talking about is quail creek?

It has a little footbridge over a creek, and then a pretty nice little setup.

It was always a nice place until Mr. range nazi showed up. And i am the last person to do stupid shit and lose priveledges.

LOL, you know first hand. I was so tired of chasing brass and farting with reloads. I only ask one thing, if you ever decide to turn them for something, just let me know, I'd take both back and pay for it dearly, just for sentimental reasons.

Thinking about the mods you did on the 10, I still have the 9/40 and considering some tweaks, you interested? That trigger is crappy, and the ejector is designed for low space orbit.

yes, fuck me. With a rough-hewn cypress twig.

Seriously, this is not even my worst fuckup. I just decide to clean house sometimes and everything is gone for under a grand. Guitars, amps, guns, coins, rocks, stamps, comics, you name it. I am like the godsend to so many people who just have patience. It is my cross to bear.

My heart literally stopped for a moment. A friend of mine recently purchased a 4" Python for $600 Don't ask me how the hell he managed that, but apparently deals are afoot - the problem is they are very few and far between with the internet as an instant appraisal tool.

Man, my strategy in hindsight is to buy things at double, sell them at half and use the losings to fund further experiments.

If anything, my suck-assery at buying guns has lead to my adaptation to higher paying jobs just to pay for my mistakes, so i get to play hard and live hard, so hey, curse me like charles darwin...
