Is it safe to keep ammo in your clips(edit:MAGS) for the guns you use for home defense?

Why wouldn't you keep ammo in a magazine if its for a home defense weapon...doesn't do ya much good if its unloaded?

Keep ammo in your magazines or mags for short. It won't hurt them. Besides, not going to do you any good to have to remove ammo from a clip, put it in the magazine then into the gun if you NEED it.

Other than what's been mentioned, if you have several magazines I would rotate the loaded magazines so the same one isn't always loaded.

Right. As little as I'm home, I do take the time to either fire off what is currently loaded at the range or just rotate them out with empty mags. I've always head conflicting stories about weakening the springs, so I don't even chance it... plus, it gives me an excuse to take everything out and fuck around with it. LOL

I load a couple less than the clip holds so there is not as much tension on the spring is not as high. That's why I keep a wheel gun with hot loads in the night stand and a short Mossberg pump by the bed.

I keep my clipazines loaded and have never had a problem.

                      Read this-

Especially in magazines. Springs fail. They stay compressed for a long time and they lose strength or fail to work at all. That's the theory...

Cliffs: Springs these days are well made and essential to our daily lives in so many ways. Cool quote = "Our distinguished family member J.P. Denis of Belgium reports that he discovered an abandoned MP40, together with several magazines, in a building that was being torn down. This piece had been left unattended for 50 years with all magazines in full compression, and they all worked perfectly. I think this is marvelous. When you think of the degree to which our culture depends upon springs, it is good to know that spring construction is so well understood."

I have also read a story about a guy who had a 1911 magazine that had been loaded since the 1940s. He put it in his gun and it shot all 7 perfectly.

As long as the magazine is not overloaded and therefore the spring beyond its intended design limit, the spring should always be ok. It's when you put 13 rounds in a 12 round magazine, you'll start having problems.

I keep my defense mags loaded 24/7. An unloaded gun is just a $500+ rock.

I also have no people under 18 in my house, so I keep my CCW with one in the chamber 24/7 also. The time it takes to rack the slide when your heart is going 200bpm could be time you don't have.

it literally has that same effect on me.

I correct people all the time and they just look at me like I'm an asshole. Some people just don't care to learn.
