Now I'll admit, I DID NOT read the entire thread.
But heres my take:
I own both a AR-15 and a AK.
Ak is ok at 100 yards, but the AR has a really tight group.
Now if you are talking SHTF, I'd take the AR and I'd take my Remington 700.
Now why do you ask? First of all, I do not plan on getting into any gunfights. I am a smart person and I know even the poorest of shots can still hit you if luck is with their side.
Now seeing that every cop these days has a AR-15/M-16 in their cop cars, I know I can find ammunition in a world of Anarchy. Even our own National Guard uses the M-16. (See my point, I can find parts and ammo if I really needed to.).
With the AR-15, I can carry 4-5 30 round mags and its not much weight.
(Yes I don't plan on attending any gunfights).
Now I plan on getting out somewhere and hiding out in the woods and leaving all the lowlifes out there to fend for themselves. I figure with a Remington 700 in .308, I can shoot deer and hogs or whatever I want to at a considerable range.
These SHTF arguments are silly.
How many people here own a AR-15 and don't clean it? I've shoot my AR-15 and even after 300-400 rounds, the chamber still looks relatively clean. Have I ever had my AR-15 Jam???? Answer is No.
Now my AK. I've shot hundreds of rounds of out it also. After shooting it, the gun doesn't really look that dirty. However Have I ever had my AK Jamb? Answer is YES. (I've had the hamer retaining pin come out because the spring that holds that pin in popped off. Hammer went down and didn't strike the firing pin).

didn't read all the arrangements, but there is no "civilian" use for either of these rifles. They were not designed or intended at all for civilian use...however I do not have any issue w/ most people owning them, I just don't see a true purpose other than it's the want of an enthusiast.
I did see the distance question come into play, and no matter what most of you say, you would not be accurate on a moving target outside of 150yds...I know some of you w/ real combat experience would be, but outside of those individuals, the # of people who would be inaccurate takes the cake.

I laughed at some of the comments in this post; especially someone who thinks that because they read a story comparing rifles from 45 years ago to the modern replacement or their parents were in or they are all of 32 so they know ARs.
I've shot a decent amount. I graduated Marine Corps Boot Camp just over 22 years ago, served in Desert Storm, and have time in OIF and OEF as well, in the last 5 years for both. I carry multiple weapons certifications.
I have mag dumped 5 of my 7 mags as quickly as my hands could change them and fire on single shot and then carried the same rifle with no malfunctions. The biggest reason for jams I have seen in the M4 platform is idiots hosing it down with CLP and wondering why shit sticks to it. The 10 level manual would solve most of their issues.
Yes it needs to be cleaned. Hell my life depends on it so yes I clean it, same reason I change my socks and wash my junk. Take care of your equipment and it takes care of you for the most part. Ive seen guys claim their weapon was a problem but watched the same guy throw mags in the sand and wonder how all that shit gets in the weapon.
when the zombies come I will have both an ar and an ak so I can use anyones ammo after I kill them.

I guess I should have said use instead of designed... poor choice of words.
Not a single person needs an AR or AK... but you could say that about a lot of other things as well.

What makes it any more of an assault rifle than my .22? None of my rifles have ever assaulted anyone. If I have, does that make me an assault person or just a person who assaults.
You dont need anything other than a shelter, ability to procreate and eat. Everything else is a want.

Please explain why you think "Not a single person" needs an AR or an AK....

It's not the governments position to tell its people what kind of weapons they can or can not have. The second amendment is the most clear in the constitution for a reason.
