  • Over-penetration: a visual approach

using boards is a pretty shitty approach for over penetration tests seeing as it's momentary instead of a constant. Ballistic gelatin is a much better comparison.

Was more for giving a perspective of home defense if a round doesn't hit its intended target how far it can keep going.

        ...

        Lessons learned:
        1. Sheetrock (drywall) doesn't slow any round down much. If you shoot in the house, walls will not stop any serious round.

If memory serves, surprisingly, .223 only does maybe 3 walls. Handguns and 00/slugs is the most penetration, 5+ walls. Bird shot barely does one wall.

Pretty compelling reasons not to fire off a handgun, much less an assault rifle, in a neighborhood if you ask me. Shotgun all the way for home defense.

                Yeah I have buckshot ready.

You can shoot, just know your backstops. :wink1:

ballistically 00 buckshot is most similar to 9 rounds from a .38.

I know from first hand experience bird shot will clear sheet rock, insulation, ply wood, and shingles! (one shot)

Interior walls are generally sheet rock, open cavity, sheet rock. Exterior wall are generally sheet rock, insulation, plywood, exterior facing. The point being the insulation, plywood, and exterior facing gives more kinetic absorption and dispersion than an interior wall

Exactly, unless you live in multi-family housing or if you have others sleeping in other rooms in the house. Brick will generally stop just about anything you would use for home defense.

The downside to that is most houses have brick cladding, not full size bricks. It still provides some kinetic reduction though. If somebody really wanted increase kinetic dispersion (and increase their r value) use spray foam insulation surrounded by fine grade wire mesh.

In any regard most home construction wont stop stop burst fire
