I really wish they made this model in .44mag... I guess I will just stick with the 45/70:wink1:

I also just got a bag of .44 mag from a guy at work, so I won't mind bringing it to shoot.

.44 Magnum is a great round. I'd love to have a lever action Marlin in .44 mag to go with the Ruger.
Well I have a Marlin .44 mag lever action and it makes an excellent brush gun. I am currently looking for a ruger .44 mag carbine. I see them on gunbroker but can't see spending 750 for a good one.

              Better accuracy, more FPS.

I just love long, octagonal shaped barrels.

One of my dream guns is a Shiloh Sharps.

When you're shooting a pistol caliber, depending on your powder, you won't gain much with all of the barrel length. The longer sight radius is certainly valuable, but at the cost of the additional weight? Judgement call.

For .44 mag it makes a big difference. Large magnum calibers suffer huge amounts of excess burn because most use rifle powders. But, handguns are meant to be carried, so much longer than 6" and you're defeating the purpose. However from a analytical approach, optimal barrel length is around 9" for a .44 mag pistol - where it achieves the maximum velocity to length.

                    Here's a chart

                    1" 742 FPS
                    2" 935
                    3" 1067
                    4" 1165
                    5" 1239
                    6" 1298
                    7" 1345
                    8" 1384
                    9" 1417
                    10" 1445
                    11" 1469
                    12" 1490
                    13" 1508
                    14" 1525
                    15" 1539
                    16" 1552
                    17" 1564
                    18" 1575

As you can see, from 1-9" there are considerable differences in velocity. And from a 1" barrel to an 18" barrel you can see the power changes of the round. The exact same caliber is twice as powerful. But, this test does not tell the whole story. When you go to longer barrels, you switch to slower burning powders so it generates more expansion as it travels down the barrel.

It looks like maybe a Thursday would be the best, but I'll have to let you know.

Even if you are shooting a pistol load, there is no cylinder gap in a lever action. All of that energy is focused down the barrel and used.

Even 100 fps would be advantageous.

Between kids and trying to be mostly debt free, it's a small price to pay for now.

CJ, I'm well aware. I was talking about the rifle, and for a brush gun I'd sure as hell take a 6lb rifle over a 7lb rifle of similar ballistics / accuracy.

Yeah apparently I don't read well. What is the barrel length of your Alaskan .454? Ever had it in front of a chronograph? I'm curious.
