  • Geez .44 mag is an amazing caliber

I've come to this conclusion after sorting through thousands of load charts and ballistic data. Everytime I look at .44 mag data the velocity and energy delivery is nuts. I really wish more semi autos were chambered in .44 mag. Imagine a .44 mag 1911.

One of my favorite handguns is the model 29 Smith I bought when Walmart was selling out all their handguns...$319. Fun-per-dollar ratio is way up there.

It's too damn big to carry concealed (6" barrel), but the hogs really hate it! I have a model 57 Smith (.41 mag) that I like alot too.

I got a Ruger Redhawk for $400 off of AR15.com. It looks brand new and was sold in 1984.

I also just got a bag of .44 mag from a guy at work, so I won't mind bringing it to shoot.

.44 Magnum is a great round. I'd love to have a lever action Marlin in .44 mag to go with the Ruger.

That was a great deal. .44 magnum is a much better caliber than off the shelf .44 ammo would lead you to believe.

Your typical WWB .44 bag is a limp wristed 1300fps or so. True .44 mag loads are in the neighborhood of 1500-1600fps on a 200gr. - or about 22gr of Alliant 2400. If you have a Ruger Super Redhawk - they can handle 24gr of 2400 - or about 1700fps on a 200gr

And a .454 Casull can do all of the above with a 300gr projectile.

For comparison a .45 ACP WWB is around 800-850fps.

Picked up two boxes of the WWB today for my .45 and also picked up the 500 ammo.

At 1900fps (350grn .50 cal), I guess I'll be shooting the Kimber first. lol

Still want a Colt Anaconda in .44 mag with 6-8" barrel. During the days of the recession they were $800 on gunbroker.com. They are $1100-1200 now. I think I am going to wait for the next recession to buy investment grade guns.
