Parents, how do you keep your young children away from your guns?

i would like one of these for the night stand.. anyone with any experience or reviews on one?

I have the Gunvault mini, which is basically the single-story version of that. Works like a champ.

I will give props to Gunvault, too. I had a 3 year old version with the "old" release mechanism which was a cable on a spool. Long story short, the cable broke off the spool. I called up Gunvault just looking to see if they'll repair it for a fee. Instead, since it was a known defect, they sent me a new safe despite being 2 years out of warranty. No cost to me whatsoever. The new release is purely metal on metal release so it should last forever.

Question, does the entering of codes make a loud beep on the gunvaults? I have a sentry safe that is now in my office, but I quit using it home since it was loud as hell. (I could cut the speaker wire or something) To the point of being able to hear it on the other side of the house.

You can disable the sound if you want.

It does beep, but haven't checked to see if I can hear it on the other end of the house.

I'm borrowing trouble for even posing the question, but that's what I've been looking at.

For now mine's locked and loaded in the nightstand, but kids get into EVERYTHING.

I appreciate your suggestion Adam, but you don't give (older) kids enough credit. One click doesn't settle well with me in terms of nosy kids, but it's certainly better than a loaded gun nightstand.

It's a combination lock. If you don't have the dials set on the combination, then there are 1000+ combinations. When you're home, set the dials to the combination, and the gun stays inside of the box until you turn the knob.

When did you have an older kid? I'm well aware of how kids like to get into things.

I'd teach them all about guns and how to use them safely, then I'd calmly explain that if I ever caught them playing with my guns without my permission they'd be shipped off to a military school and wouldn't ever see their friends, TV or any pets again.

It worked for me. I knew where all the guns and ammo were in my house and never shot any neighborhood kids or myself. We once I had a round ricochet and nail me in the chest but it didn't break the skin.

when my niece and nephew come over to visit or stay, i just lock all ammo in my military ammo box. verify all guns are unloaded sans the .40 i keep on my person.

It's a wonder any of us survived growing up in houses with guns. Dad taught us gun safety and how to shoot at about 8 years old. He also taught us never to fuck with the guns. He always had a loaded pistol in the nightstand and a closet full of guns and ammo and never any incidents.

X 2....There where taught from a young age the about guns and what they can do. I keep my guns in an open cabinet in the living room with no issues....I do plan on getting a safe soon but that is only for the safety of the guns.....

there are not many kids that have gun accidents. I just prefer to be safe than sorry. We don't shield our little ones from everything, but there is no second chance for a bullet in a kid.

Teaching kids at 8 is a lot different than trying to teach a toddler/baby. It's just not going to happen, that's why we lock up guns.

A response in another thread from Denny had me thinking. I don't have a serious girlfriend currently, or an older kid, but I figured the thread would be worth posting.

I will get some random chick knocked up eventually, so it's worth knowing what other board members do.

I keep all my guns in the safe but one and I keep it high up. If your not at least 5 ft tall you won't reach it. My kids are still to small to reach that high, but my 4 year old knows not to play with daddy's guns. I will be buying one of the mini safes for the nightstand before the end of the year but for now out of sight and out of reach works.

When I get home, I normally don't remove my carry piece. I've changed my oil, rotated tires, etc., in my garage while carrying.

Yeah I believed in the high places thing, but my two year old twins work as a team to get places they should not be.

I.e. one holds the little shopping cart, the other climbs up on it and then...say the bed and then pulls the other up. They are like little convicts with nothing better to do than figure out stuff like that.
