  • Parents, how do you keep your young children away from your guns?

For the bulk of them, the easy answer is a safe and/or trigger locks, but what about your home protection weapons?

It seems to me that a locked up gun could be an issue when time could be a factor, but so is having a loaded weapon anywhere near a child. Is there a happy medium?

I have all my guns in a safe. The safe is in my closet in my restroom, so not too far from me at night, but not worth the risk of leaving one out with a curious two year old. We sleep with the house alarm on so hopefully that would be enough to wake me and give me time to get to the safe....
Thought about one of the biometric Gun Vaults for beside the bed...

I've been thinking about this too since I have a son who is about to start walking and getting into things now. My wife and I both keep loaded pistols in our nightstands. I have decided to get Gun Vaults like Chopped54 was talking about.
Just remember to test it every once in a while and change your batteries so you don't have to go fumbling for the key when you need to get it open in a real emergency.

Gun Vault and what's not locked up is either unloaded with a cable lock or on my person.

Gun vault in nightstand for the loaded handgun. And ammo is on a top shelf that they can't reach even with the help of any chair in the house. The rest of the guns are out of sight, out of mind.

Most important, they also can recite Eddie the Eagle rules by memory. I've tested them a couple of times with an "inactive" firearm. So far, so good.

I keep mine under his crib. I figure it's the last place he'll look!

Costco has the gunvaults at a good price. I brought my old "safe" into the office for when I go to the bar I can just put the gun there for the night.

Anyway, I'm mounting the gunvault safe to the bed. My wife's G19 and my Ruger LCP will be in it. The locking mechanism seems straightforward and easy to use. Which to me is clutch.

Yes, a locked up weapon is not the best thing in the world. However, it's better than your curious and goofy toddler/kid blow his/her head off if they get to the weapon.

As soon as I decide on the shotgun lock, get it ordered, and mounted, I'll see about getting some pics posted. I am hopeing to get it ordered and installed before Christmas but shit keeps coming up; new tires, stove breaks, ete, etc.

I have a small safe with a spring loaded door. It has a three dial lock that opens with a quarter of a turn. Set the combo and your gun is only a quarter turn away. If you're going out, change the combo and the gun stays locked up.

Holy shit I owe you beer! I have been looking for something like that for my truck. I found something else I liked for my wife's 4runner but could not find anything for my pickup. Thanks!

I'm borrowing trouble for even posing the question, but that's what I've been looking at.

For now mine's locked and loaded in the nightstand, but kids get into EVERYTHING.

I appreciate your suggestion Adam, but you don't give (older) kids enough credit. One click doesn't settle well with me in terms of nosy kids, but it's certainly better than a loaded gun nightstand.
