This I've done. In fact, to test them on the Eddie the Eagle rule, I've unloaded the XD with slide back and left it on a bed or elsewhere. So far, the kids have performed great.

I still keep the XD locked up in a Gunvault in my nightstand.

Anybody have one of those shotgun holders that go on the bed rails? I was thinking about that and securing the trigger well somehow.

If someone comes into my house, the only moment I want them to consider their options is when I have a gun pointed at them and they are caught off guard. I don't care to get into a shooting match in my house, so I don't want them to know where I'm at. And furthermore, I don't want to deter them before I encounter them because I'd like to be able to identify them for my own safety.
        I have this crimson trace...

It just takes a firm grasp to turn it on...
If it gets to that point, they would have already been met by my 3 dogs...

My shotgun is chambered, safety on, in my closet. I, too, have young children and have showed it to them and explained the difference between toy and real. I think chambered is the only way, and I'm not convinced with the whole "rack the slide" see BG run thing. I'd want to put a bead on someone silently, and then let them know their options. I'll be in the market for a hand gun soon, and I'm thinking about keeping it in one of those Gunvault safes, with the 4 finger quick access combos.

My carry stays with one in the chamber same with my shotgun and a couple others that are hidden.

We have no kids and two 70 pound very attentive boxers. So we don't have to worry about curious kids and have the added benefit of the early warnings the dogs will give.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Yeah that's the plan but he just turned 2. It would do nothing more than scare the bejezzus out of him to shoot anything. If I let him handle an unloaded weapon I am afraid he would then think it is ok to do so from now on out. Him being 2 he has no clue if a weapon is unloaded or not and no sense what so ever about firearm safety. Its a tricky spot to be in wanting to protect the home and my kid from himself. Any type of device will slow me down if I ever had to get to it quickly but I do not think I have a choice. As you said, " No offense meant" but have you been around a 2 year old? I am just trying to get this kid to shit on the pot instead of in his pants right now!

If you are at home you have few seconds to chamber a round since you are in your own territory whereas if you are out and about it totally changes the game. Just my thoughts.

if somebody kicks in your door, you don't have seconds IMO

If it takes seconds to chamber a round, might wanna look into something else to defend your house with :wink1:

They might be left handed and using a Glock with a stock slide release. It's very cumbersome.
