Do you need a gun to go through this class? I'd like to get my chl but don't currently have a pistol. Not sure which I want and don't have 500+ to buy the ones I have found that I like.. Would be nice to have the chl part done so that when I do find the weapon I like and can afford, my chl is done..
You will need a pistol to take the shooting portion of the testing, but if the range you will be testing at rents them, then you can just rent one and buy 50 rounds of ammo...

But, if you haven't owned a pistol before, then I would suggest taking a class that teaches proper handling/safety and shooting technique before taking the CHL class.

Not trying to be insulting or anything, just sayin...
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

I agree 100% on learning safety prior to gun ownership or carrying. That said I believe anyone can qualify.
When I took my class there was 2 little old ladies in there that had never shot a gun in their life. They went with the expectation they were going to rent a gun and buy the ammo at the range. The only gun to rent was a 9mm, and there was no 9mm in stock. They borrowed my 3" .45 and both passed with the kicking little Taurus Millennium

We have a few pistols that we let people use right now. However, it is just a few and then you get into our personal pistols. Mike is going to order another set very soon. The ammo must be purchased at the range if you borrow a pistol (just like any other range). If you do not have one, please tell the OP when you register so accommodations can be made.

So that's the instructor in me talking, basically it's much less hassle if you have a pistol.

Non taken. I have a few pistols, just dont think they are legal to carry? They are old .22's that were handed down to me by my father-in-law before he passed away. Guess i could use one for the class, just not something that i would want to carry around as I am not sure about the registering part with them.. One is a rg 14 i believe its a 6 round revolver the other is a north american arms .22 5 round mini gun as i call it..

Id like to get something like a 380 to carry. found a few i like but the price is more then i have available..

I can go over legal vs not legal to carry if you want, but for the most part there are not many "pistols" that are considered illegal.

In terms of the shooting test, there are requirements. There are two types of CHL that you can get, SA, and NSA. Bascally they translate into Revolver Only or Semi auto and Revolver. SA Stands for Semiautomatic. If you qualify with a revolver, you get NSA, which means you can Not carry a Semiautomatic pistol. You can retake the shooting portion of your test at a later date with a semiauto and get your licence changed, but it will cost you $25 to Austin, and a range Fee.

There are also minimum caliber requirements. A revolver must be a .32 or larger. A semi auto must be a .380 or larger.

very good info! Thanks!! I need to look into chl more, its something that i would like to get, but just never had much time to look into it in terms of legalities and such.

Why is there a restriction on caliber size? Probably a dumb question, but im curious..

So can I show up for the class with my Tokarev 9mm semi-auto and ALSO with my Taurus .38 police special and qualify for both?

30 Mins east of Dallas from Keller seems like a bit of a drive?
Not to familiar with anywhere N & E of the DFW airport.
But I would like to take this as well.

I think he's saying if you qualify with a semi you can carry either.

This is correct. SA > NSA

The size restriction is mainly due to the ease of shooting a smaller pistol. A .22lr 6" Barrel pistol has almost no recoil. It would not be an accurate test of skill for a carry weapon that is most likely going to be a sub 4" barrel, and much larger in caliber.

I have seen people shoot .44 mags and other giant revolvers though. It is always a hoot to see them shoot the 3 yard target with those monsters. The flame almost sets the targets on fire.

Also, before I forget, I will do my best to answer any questions you guys have, but unless we say it in class, do not consider it law or fact. People may consider some random opinion I have "the law" and I deff do not want that.
