Well, I finally gave in and went shooting for the first time ever this past weekend with Womack out at his Dad's farm in the middle of nowhere. I have to say, I had alot of damn fun and apparently I'm a natural good shot.
Womack has a small arsenal himself, plus friends who all brought out their fancy toys. Seeing all those guns laying on the table was abit intimidating, but I was determined to give it a shot after all the badgering I've recieved for awhile from Womack, Blownaltered, ThreeFingerPete and Pro88LX to go shooting with them at some point but never did because I'm just not comfortable with them.
Where I am from (Los Angeles, Ca) the gun culture is the exteme opposite as it is here in Texas. Everyone here seems to have grown up with guns for recreation and it seems no different than having a dog as a companion, only natural to have a gun too. Back home, guns have a serious bad stigma attached to them. If guns were around, there was some bad shit to go down. Plus, gun safety around a group of people isn't a concern at all, they get waved around like a flag at a football game.
Womack and ThreeFingerPete both taught me all the safety stuff I needed to know to help me feel comfortable, always keep the gun pointing down range, never point it at anyone for any reason unless you intend on shooting them, no finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot etc.
So the first thing I shot was a scoped rifle 22. (sorry about not knowing the technical stuff about the gun like make/model) shooting about 100 yards at some metal shooting targets. It honestly felt like playing a video game, very easy, I instantly understood why it was called a plink gun. Haha. Even my wife got involved and took some shots (and she HATES guns). She tooks some shots, did well and even smiled afterwards.
Next up was skeet shooting with a Remington 12 gauge that was all modded out. ( I think was the brand, there was so many guns I couldn't keep them straight) Being it was a shotgun I was abit nervous. I loaded it correctly the first time and really liked the feel of this gun. I liked it so much I went I didn't miss one time shooting the clays! I really could see myself getting into that, it was alot of fun! I knew right then, I had to have a shotgun. I definetely want one of those fancy shock absorbing stocks. After the first shot with it and not feeling a huge painful kick I was expecting from the stereotypes I had in my head about shotguns, my confidence went way up with it.
The next gun was serious business - a fully modded AR-15. Anyone that knows Womack knows he's abit nuts and does nothing half assed when it comes to his toys. He handed me the gun and told me how to load it while smiling like the cat that ate the canary the whole time. I knew I was in for something crazy when he does that, especially with no one else shooting it first to give me an idea what was coming. I finished loading it and everyone around me started putting in their earplugs and smiling as well. Uh oh..
I got set, made sure it comfortable and solidly in my hands. I scoped in on a metal target all the way across the pond that was about 100 yards away. Took a breath and held it, squeezed the trigger and "BOOM!" Holy fuck that was loud and a strong kick back. I couldn't even hear if I hit the target or not. I heard Womack laughing manically and I yelled "did I hit it?" Womack said "Hit it? You fucked destroyed it!" Honestly, he could have told me I 20ft off, I would have never known otherwise. lol. I slowly finished off the clip squeezing one shot at a time hitting my target more often than not. Holy fuck, that was a serious gun.
Womack (still laughing his ass off of course) says "nice shooting, now let me show you how a bad motherfucker does it" He loaded a clip and fired off a full clip so fast I could have sworn it was an auto! lol. Womack is a bad man, one former military guy not to be fucked with if he has a gun in his hand.
Next gun was a SKS Ak47. I did not like this gun at all. I guess it was because of the 40 years in age difference in technology between the gun I had just finished shooting. The SKS felt like shit with it's wooden stock, very nose heavy and didn't inspire any confidence. I can see why gangsters seem to like them so much though, it seems no matter what you point one of those things at, its going to fuck everything up in its path, it will just take three times as many shots because of its lousy accuracy. It wasn't just me either. lol.
Next was a .40cal pistol. I don't know the make of this one, but I didn't like this gun either. It had a really strong kick to it, but I really didn't like the grip and the way it felt in my hand. It had a weird shape to the grip that just didn't fit right in the corner of my thumb. I don't know if it was because I'm left handed or the grip just sucked.
Anyways, I thought I would share my story of the first time going shooting finally. I definetly want to go again and try some more pistols. I'm sold on the shotgun for sure, that was just way too much fun not to have one and it's great for home defense.
