Forgetting his Glock in the nightstand, your friend is just lucky it wasn't a real home invasion robbery where the perp had a gun in hand ready to use it.

several years ago a dumbass that lived up the street from me when I lived with my parents did the same thing one night around midnight when I was in basic training....my dad ALMOST blew his head off with a 12 guage but figured out quickly that he was trashed and told him to get the fuck off his property. About 2 years later the same dumbass did the same thing at another house but was arrested and charged with home invasion...last time I heard about him he was being released from prison. He's lucky he's alive.

That is crazy. Two things that would make it hard for me not to have shot the guy are, 1) he is breaking in to the house, 2) kid being in the mix. I think instantly that I would go nuts thinking the worst. That guy is lucky he is alive, plain and simple.

If the guy was unarmed, I'd have a really hard time shooting him, he would have to be threatening in some way. Very traumatizing for sure, but not worth a guys life, you might get away with it in court, but something like that would weigh on my mind forever.
In think that in this case, forgetting the pistol was a good thing.

I think I would have trouble dealing with the fact that I killed a guy that ultimately didn't pose a threat, regardless of my mindset at the time I pulled the trigger.
Kinda like the thread on the porch with all the black kids beating on cars. The gut reaction here is "shoot 'em," but a few dents and dings aren't worth dealing with taking another human life.
Perhaps I value the lives of stangers a little more than most, it has nothing to do with being on the left coast.
