Happened to me but I was buying 5 guns at one time. I figured that was the delay.

I'm over it by now. The biggest problem is that when I first went to academy, I was expecting to walk out with it and couldn't so that was dissapointing. But when I went to bass pro I was expecting to get delayed and it was a plesant surprise to leave with it. That purchase sparked the new expectancy of walking out with the ar from cheaper than dirt which in turn, set me up for more dissapointment. If I had been delayed at bass pro as well, I would have expected being delayed at ctd

I don't know if you're referring strictly to store-front operations or if that was a general statement, but the vast majority are still phoned in. Been to a gun show lately?

Never been delayed in my life, no CHL (yet) either. First big box store gun purchase was last Black Friday at an Academy in NRH. Got a Rossi 2" .357 for $199 and I walked out no issues.

I haven't bought any other guns from a store, all my stuff is off Texas Gun Trader...so much easier...

I've bought six in the past three months with no delays.

I used to get delayed on every purchase, was a pain in the ass. Get your CHL and you wont have to worry about it....

I also believe they can still phone them in. In smaller deidcated gun stores, I have seen and heard their conversation on the phone several times. It usually takes them less than 5 minutes to look over my 4473, call it in on phone, and get an approval.
I bought a gun at Cabelas about a month ago and have no idea what they did. I waited in line twice and dealt with at least 4 different employees in the process. Plus, it looked like another person was doing the paperwork and background check.

Enter the info into the NICS search as it appears on the 4473. Wait a couple minutes and retrieve the info. NICS will give a Proceed, Delay, or Deny response. If they get a Delay, they cannot release the firearm until they receive a Proceed from NICS, unless they want a federal offense on their record. Every time they search through NICS it shows any searches that are pending/delayed from that store. It can take 30 days or more for the search to come back with a proceed or deny response. Once the Proceed or Deny is given, the store will call you and let you know.

If the person being searched has a really bad history, NICS may even call the store. Had this happen 1 time. Put info into NICS, 30 seconds later, phone rings and it's NICS/FBI stating under no circumstance do we sell that individual a firearm. Just goes to show you, that even though it is all web-based now, there is still someone on the other end looking at every single search that is done.
                    UH WRONG!

I just had one called in a month ago right in front of me.

Uhhh wrong read the 4473 the delay can last no longer than 3 buisness days and as far as calling in I called in 3 today and everytime they answer "thank you for calling nics may I have your FFL number" but then I may be calling someone that is trying to steal credit card number. Also a 4473 is only valid for 30 days from 3 buisness days after the initial check so if a proceed can take up to 30 days then the form would expire before the proceed would come back. Read your rule book.

I guess I should have prefaced my comment with "unless you are buying from a gun show or small gun store"...

Most large retail stores that sell firearms do the NICS check online.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

So what you're saying is that your statements "It's all done on the computer now. There is no phone call," are wrong?
