    So i decided to make it look a little better and basically followed cj's steps.. I think it turned out ok for my first attempt to even take a rifle apart.

    sanded down the wood

    minwax prestain

    put the stain down and a lot of spray on clear coat

    let it dry and re-assembled

    Definitely not show quality but looks way better!!

      Hey not bad! Got it all back together and it looks great! I'm assuming you used a polyurethane spray?

          I noticed you kinda had to leave the stain in between the checkering. Is that really the only option, or is there a good way to get that stuff out? I want to refinish my shotgun stock and it is checkered.

            I probably could've gotten it out but it would have taken hours per side

              You can blast it lightly to get it out, but I suggest you have some checkering tools to sharpen it back up.
