  • GEN III night vision questions?

Long story short I was over at a friends house last night looking at all his toys and he bust out a gen III night vision monocular that is rifle mountable. He uses it with his NV compatible eotech. The quality of this unit was far above and beyond other optics of this type I have had the chance to look through. He turned me on to the guy selling them and I talked price with them. He told me that the tubes were damaged military units and that he fixes them. So some of these have small blemishes (black spots or areas) when looking through them and depending on how clear they are the price goes up. The one I am looking at buying has just one tiny spot and its on the far side so it really affects nothing.

What should something like this go for?

I doubt its hot. I think he has the hookup on damaged units and he repairs them for profit.

I am assuming that you are talking about a PVS-14. There is no fixing a damaged tube; period. Normal Mil tubes allow for black specks if they are not in center or very large. Buy a high grade tube and put in into a sight body yourself. I buy parts from Wolverine Technologies and have never had a problem with them. They also have some top grade tubes in stock right now.

          I wouldn't give more then $800 for a retired military PVS-14.

Id just make sure on how it was released if it was previous govt property.

Depending on where the item falls, they meet certain demil requirements. If the unit wasnt demilled appropriately you could essentially wind up talking to some govt official.

Odds are it wont happen, but you never know.

I just asked the guy and yes they are PVS-14 military monoculars. He was sure to tell me that they are NOT the civilian model. (I do not know the difference) I just went on that site and all the PVS-14 monoculars are in the high 2k range and up. So why would you not give more than $800?

From what I have briefly read on the AN/PVS 14 set ups is there's no difference from govt and civilian models from ITT. They get an order from the govt and they pull parts fromthe mfg line to fill orders and under go govt tests rather than the standard quality control test. In the end, the only difference is the AN PVS 14 is legally a govt name. The rest go to market under different names.

Ok gotcha. The guy is wanting about twice what svo855 said he would pay for one so I am wondering if one could source the parts themselves and get as good of a quality unit for less $$$ I must say that I was very impressed with what I was looking through last night. And with an IR flashlight it was amazing.

The tube has a finite lifespan and it's performance degrades over time. If the military is getting rid of them during 2 active wars then there isn't much life left in them.

If you do get one make sure to turn it on every so often and don't just stick it in the safe.

OK I gotcha now. Ok these are in fact retired units. The tubes are original and they have some new parts. If you think I can do better putting one together can I contact you and have you help me pick some stuff out?

Building one will set you back nearly $1800- $2000 with all new parts. Buying one that is already built will cost the same or more. Don't go cheap on this; you get what you pay for.

Thats the price range I was figuring to be in. I do not want to spend $1800 on something that is near the end of its lifespan when I could put together something new for the same price. Would you be willing to assist me? Otherwise I am going to have to take a gamble on an already completed unit.
