I also shot an AR-10 with a Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 and while the magnification was nice to see where the bullets were hitting, I had a hell of a time seeing through the scope at its max magnification. Any slight movement in my eye in any direction and it just went black. This has to do with parallax? Either way, it was frustrating as hell. I handed that thing back and proceeded to shoot the Savage
Yes, I can see 30 cal holes with a 4x eotech magnifier at 100yards easily. 30 cal holes are much, much easier to see. 22LR is harder to see than .223, even though they are the same diameter, .22 loses such velocity that it makes a ragged hole which closes back up.

Bushnell Elite's are very good scopes - they are made by Bosch & Lamb - great glass for the money. But yes, as magnification increases, the two main elements in the lens separate further from each other, when you increase the distance between the glass, you decrease your eye relief via triangulation - the only way to decrease this is by increasing objective size. Parallax is a different element but related.

I have one myself, love it. Not sure I would own an AR that didn't have a piston conversion.

Woohooo I am a baller. lol

I got to tell you it sure is nice pulling th BCG out and wiping it down with a rag and running a bore snake down the barrel a few times after a couple hundred rounds. No more lug scrubbing or bolt scraping for me ever again.

That is kind of the nice thing about an AK also. I have shot some "captured" full autos out here in Afghanistan and when I pulled them apart most have been polished to a brilliant slick finish inside the. A quick wipe with a rag and a little oil and they run like a top. Side note: An Afghan who claims to be just a farmer but has an imaculate AK is a liar. They may not wash their nasty ass but they keep that gun very clean and polished under the dust covers.

I have seen some beautiful female interpreters out here. But yes, a lot are hideous.

Sorry to start a crazy debate thread. But This weapon is kinda next on my "must have" list... I am very ifnorant when it comes to most semi auto weapons..(still would like a good reccomendation on some good sights for my ar15 iron or red/greed dot).. I dont know why i must have one but they look like they would be fun at the range!!

I use the magpul backup iron sights on my AR, as does my cousin. Neither of us has had a problem with them holding zero, and they offer some of the best bang for your buck as far as iron sights are concerned.

Take that with a grain of salt, though. My experience with AR-type iron sites is limited to my magpuls, and the standard M16 sights the military uses.

One of my first guns was an AK-74, it should be left as is. The most you can or should put is some sort of optics but as CJ mentioned they are a pain in the assholes and sometimes dont hold zero. Dont take all my word for it though as I havent put optics on my Kalashnikov. I strongly suggest that you dont take this rifle seriously. It can be treated and should be treated like shit. Nothing will happen to it. I have had one catastrophic jam, that required the combined manpower of a small soviet village, along with a hammer and sickle to pry it loose. You can run shit ammo through it no problem just wash the fucking thing with water afterwards to get rid of salts and then dry and oil. Ak's are cheap so you should leave them as so. Dont over tapco your ak. a simple rail to get a foregrip and an optic will do. Some can be had in the 47 7.62 platform for $429 at aimsurplus.

I strongly suggest getting an AR as well though. I have 1 AK and have 3 AR's. to put it simply the AK is a recreational shoot to shit rifle, and should be left like that.

You can buy my YHM gas block and back up sights for your AR, if you want.

A comment was made about 7.62 ammo being way cheaper... sure if you want to compare shitty ammo to mid grade ammo it's cheaper but you can get the same ammo in .223 for the same price so the argument about ammo being way cheaper doesn't hold water. But that's just my opinion.
what i said was "7.62 ammo weighs what - twice as much as .223 and still costs way less?"

it does costs less, it does weigh twice as much.
                            Next question?

damn I need to get a nice AK that cost well over a 1000 bucks then feed shitty steel ammo through it all day just to piss the AR guys off.
never clean it and keep going until it won't work.

if only I went shooting more often! and I could afford 10K rounds of ammo for no reason but to prove AK's are awesome weapons.

went looking for 5 minutes - kind of partial to this bad boy

just get it and go slap some hardwood stock and grip back on it, fucking shit would be sweet.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some AR's. But they are becoming totally played out, and I just don't get that warm fuzzy feeling about seeing yet another version of a modular rifle

It would shoot the same no matter what you put in it. AK's are good for fun, decent for varmint shooting within 100 yards. But as a business, marksmanship, or hunting weapon they're not the best choice. In their original designed purpose they are automatics. shooting a 6" group at 100 yards doesn't mean shit when you put 8 rounds in that group in a second - they are very effective for combat. No one here is in combat, no one here is shooting an automatic, so the point Alex made is sound from that respect.

I've argued this point more times than I can remember. The way I personally feel is they are great fun, but they are a go-nowhere weapon as far as expandability. Optic mounts are a bitch, cost a fortune, and most don't work worth a shit without a lot of work. So as long as you're within 100 yards, they do fine.

I like AK's because I can buy cheap shitty charcoal-laden steel ammo and bump fire them until they burst into flames. I treat them like any respectable russian would - like shit. I like that I can get cheap x39 ammo and I don't have to screw with reloading it. But if it's your first weapon, it's pretty limited and probably not the best choice for flexibility imho. If you have a few AR's, bolt guns, and have a decent collection, an AK is fun for fucking around.

I agree with CJ 100%. I have an Egyptian AK and love the hell out of it. But it is strictly for fun and for looks. It shoots anything I put through it and if I am lucky I might his something farther out the 100 yards. Still fun as hell to shoot as fast as I can.
