If you're decent at welding and measuring, you can build yourself a true HK G3 for around $500-600.

I've been toying with the idea of doing this, what can you tell me about it. Did you go with the receiver from HKparts?

That is a great price. Anything below $1200 is good. Yale and I went to a gun shop in Austin one time and I was filling out the 4473 to buy one, but then the guy told me that it was chambered in 7.62x39. I almost cried.
The next time I come up your way I will shoot you a pm and maybe we can have a 91/93 range day, I promise not to bring or bring up the K word

no, I get my HK parts from old milspec HK issue weapons from robertrtg.com I only buy new issue late model selectors and HK stuff from HKParts (they are expensive as hell). You need to know what you're doing, and it takes a lot of trial and error, it is harder than most rifles, but it's worth your time. You need to get a jig to bent the flats, and you need to get the mandrel insert to hammer your rails/races into spec.

I would, but not to build just one, I would want to build at least 3 more for myself, so yes in the distant future I'm up for it.

Let me know, prior to the date, so I can start buying parts.

Sounds like a whole lot of fun! I've been eying both the HKparts site and robertrtg site, mentally piecing a rifle together. I'd have to build two though, a HK91, and then a HK51. I used to have a Century Arms 91 that wasn't too bad, but I traded it plus cash on a M1A... Wish I'd just forked over the cash and kept it. Whenever I get around to doing the build, I'll have to get with you and get some pointers.
