They are full auto, and converted SP89s can legally be full auto if you install a registered auto sear.

Mine will be semi automatic, but an SBR. A sear costs about 15k.... and I just cant justify that for tiny piece of metal with a number on it at this point in my life.

That's still going to be a kick ass sub gun to have. With you being a H&K guy and all, have you had a chance to shoot a UMP?

Yeah I can't wait for the stamp to come in. Me and CJ put about 200-250 rounds through it yesterday (it just doesn't have a stock yet), and it is a blast to shoot. We did have some trouble getting it sighted properly, but it did go bang every time and we got it to bump fire a little bit. I anxiously check my mailbox every day after work to see if my damn stamp is there, haha.

I have not shot a UMP, and to be honest I am not super interested in them. I thought about buying a USC and converting it, but then I learned that they function via a traditional simple blowback method, rather than roller lock. It just seemed like too much money to invest that I could put towards some sort of MP5 build.

Any plans to eventually throw a can on it?

I bought a 3 lug barrel for it, but I need to have it installed. Installing a barrel an on an HK roller lock gun is extremely difficult, and costs about $400-$500.

As soon as my stamp comes in I will play with it for a month or two, and then send it off to have the barrel installed. I will get a can for it eventually.

Oh shit... that's expensive. Please excuse my being uneducated on this subject matter but what makes the barrel different where it's hard to install a new one?

HK roller locked stuff is based off of a very, very old design, and as such is not as plug and play as a lot of modern stuff. The barrels are not quick change.

To remove an mp5/g3 barrel, you must press the trunion cross pin out of the trunion. Next, press the barrel out of the trunion. This is really, really hard.

To install a new barrel, you must first drill a hole in it (yes, you need to drill a hole at the base of your new pretty barrel with a drill press). Before drilling the new hole, you have to start it with an endmill so the hole isn't starting on a curved surface. Drill it through at 3/16", then ream it so it's about .002" smaller than your barrel pin. The standard barrel pins are .1970", so a .1950"-.1955" hole should be about right. Then pin the barrel into the trunion... which is also fucking hard. next index front sight on barrel, then solder it on, followed by the cross pin drilled and pressed in.

So yeah, it is expensive because of what is involved.

Fucking gorgeous guns. Why are the 93s and 91s so steep in price? I mean, other than the "HK" stamped on the side.

If you get a 21 make sure it's worth a fuck. I debated on a sear with one as a host and that gun was a huge piece of shit. Only to find out most are The host was traded out for parts and sear put into an mp5 clone.

They only sold assault rifles to the civilian market for a short period of time in the US. They are good guns and very desirable. That coupled with low supply means high prices.

That's right, it was developed by Ludwig Vorgrimler a designer from the Mauser Werkes, who was originally one of the designers w/ Stecke on the MG42 (where delayed roller blowback came from). When it became clear that the Germans were going to lose the war, several of the weapon designers sought refuge with different allies of the time to produce weapons for them in exchange for the avoidance of possible war crime charges. Vorgrimler took his experimental STG-45 design to first France first, and then after being turned down, he was approached by Spain, and was able to get contracted to produce what became the CETME rifle. Once his contract was complete he garnered attention from the West Germans and eventually ended up partnering with H&K to produce the CETME B. Eventually H&K purchased a license for the design to produce the G3 - so it's kind of an interesting story. Contrary to popular belief, the CETME is the original rifle (commonly referred to as HK91 'clones'", and the G3 is the actual clone.

So since I can't afford anything HK, are the CETME's any good? If so what model/generation is ok? Are the century arms or the PTR 91 ok?

PTR is great for the money. Century CETME's are very hit and miss, really need to know what you're doing to buy one - they really messed them up quite often - but you can find good ones if you know what to look for. I can give you a few things to look for when buying one to identify problems they usually have. A good shape CETME is an awesome gun for the money, the best .308 rifle for the money there is.
