Laws on travelling with ammo?

If I'm gonna have it shipped, why not just buy online and save the hassle of taking time out of vacation to get a box, packing material, and find a place to ship it?

My thought was to take advantage of the cheaper local prices, and bring it back with me in my luggage as I'm legally allowed, and save the extra expense. I've not flown from CA with a firearm/ammo yet, but the last time I flew out of DFW with my Kimber it was easy breezy, not so much as an eyebrow was raised. I'll be flying out of Houston to head home, but I can't imagine that it would be much different.

Thanks for the heads up on declaring it, I guess it was ignorant to think that I could just pack it and no one would be the wiser. Hell, in this case it would probably get my bag handled a little lighter on the tarmac. Maybe I'll start carrying a box with me when I travel, just to keep my shit from getting beaten up.
