    Home defense - 12ga Pump Shotgun. Just imagine hearing the sound of a shotgun cartridge being pumped into the chamber in the dark, in a house you don't belong in? Then, if you actually have to fire it, "stopping power" is noooo problem and you don't have to be dead on!

    Range - .22 Pistol. So fun, the ammo is way cheap and you can still become proficient with a hand gun. If you want to get good, but you're on a budget, you can't go wrong with a .22. Later, when you get something bigger, you'll already be a pretty good shot.

    Like a couple have suggested, I'd also hit up a gun range and check into becoming a member, if you're going to go regularly. The one I belong to my all day range fee is only $8, my wife shoots free with me on Wed(lady's night), they have a family night, rental of the featured gun of the month is free, you just have to buy ammo from them, I get a price break on gun rentals and any purchases and a punch card for free range fee, test fire, ammo, etc. Too, if you're going to buy a gun, advice from a gun addict is not a bad thing, and that's who gets a job at the gun range! Just watch out of the gun snobs; there are plenty of quality guns out there that don't cost an arm and a leg.

      Springfield XDM in 9mm (cheaper ammo so you will practice more)

      But for purely home defense I'd go with 12 guage pump action Remington or Mossberg, or a flamethrower.

        When you buy shoes I'm sure you hit a few stores, try on some and walk around in the ones that feel comfortable.
        A pistol isn't much different. Go to a show or some shops, handle the ones you are interested in, and then rent and see how they feel and how well you shoot with it. Try it in different calibers and see which you like. Once you have your short list, get on the internet and see if there are any dependability issues.

              Ruger SR9C + a good handgun safe should be <= $500.

              I like it for a beginner because it has extra safety features and a chambered round indicator.
