well 500-600 is kind of out of the quality 1911 range, you'll be looking at a rock island or a taurus. For that kind of money, a good reliable pistol would be a glock or XD."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

thats pretty much the purpose for it. I live with my uncle and there are times where I have the house to myself for periods of time.
Otherwise just do what I'm shocked nobody on here has suggested you do. Go to one of the local ranges and rent a few to see what you prefer. Its all about the groups YOU can put down. My friend has a Kahr CW40 and loathes it, cant group with it for shit but he is a pretty good shot. I picked it up and was keeping them in a couple inches at 7 yards my first mag through. Not stellar, but acceptable IMHO. Granted it is your first weapon so you're just getting your feet wet, but why not do it right the first time? Its your life.

As for hand guns, I came across a Glock 19 as my first, and it was a good entry level and uncomplicated pistol to learn with imo. The XD's have a slightly different grip angle and feel, which may be more comfortable to you, so try them both (or any comparables) if a polymer is your goal.
As Matt (03trubluGT) said, it's still just a tool, your familiarity and proficiency with the weapon is what will make it effective. Handle and shoot any and all guns that you're considering, and pick the one that you are most comfortable with. I personally shot 50 or so rounds through the Glock 9mm, and bought one that day.
I also bought a Kimber 1911 because it's pretty, and a helluva lot of fun to shoot, but the Glock (.40 at this point) is what stays loaded and by my bedside.

I think Big A made the post I would've made, minus the Kimber part cause I'm poor.
You could buy an 18" shotgun cheap, and then a used Glock or XD a little cheaper and be around a 600-700 dollar range. Just basic 18" shotguns can be had for under 300 dollars though.Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.
