  • SWFA SS vs Nikon Monarch

I've been looking at getting a Nikon Monarch, but I found what looks like a great deal on a SWFA SS 3-9x42 with this mount for free (and a couple other things thrown in.)

Any thoughts on Nikon Monarch vs. SWFA SS? (For my Remington 700, Hunting and and paper punching mostly.)

    The Nikons options:
SWFA is an optics manufacturing specializing in rifle scopes built for tactical, hunting, and long range shooting known for quality and precision optics.

Any reason that mount won't work on a Remington 700? It is a "low" mount and is noted as "slightly forward". Is that "slightly forward" likely to stretch the limits of the eye relief @ 77-105 mm?

The Nikon will have better glass, but the SS will have more adjustment. If you don't need the range of adjustment in the SS, the Nikon should do you right.

I have seen some pretty hazy Monarchs. Sort of unfortunate. I've looked through Monarchs on a few seperate occasions that didn't look as good as buckmasters.

I would buy the 3-9x40 all day every day.

I always wondered what made the Super Snipers different (and generally more expensive). At this point I don't think I need a huge amount of adjustment. Like most gun guys i "have plans" to shoot farther than 200 or 300 yards, but it isn't likely to happen any time soon.

I was hoping the Monarch line would be fairly nice, that's really disappointing.

I know most of the work that needs to be done is for me to improve my part. At this point I just want to get a quality scope to replace the $15 one I am currently using. I think at that point I can be more sure that the inaccuracy is me and I can try to fix whatever it is I may be doing wrong.

I have also heard good things about Zeiss, I was looking at the Conquest. Anybody have any thoughts on Zeiss, or something else in the $400-$500 range?

As much as I hate to agree with this dipshit, the buckmasters are generally a lot of scope for the money if you are wanting to stick to one of the huge name brands.

I have a Zeiss that is a fantastic scope. I do wish they would start making more in a 30mm tube though. Assholes.

Buy the SS, or PM me the purchase details and I will.

They do make Zeiss in a 30mm tube. You just have to pay for a Diavari to get it.

Just sent you a PM Pete. That scope is a kit deal, multiple available. If anybody else is interested PM me. I don't want to post the link.

You know what, I just get caught up with all of these really good scopes out there, but the truth is I'm a newb and I need to work on my part first I guess.

I may just go with a Buckmaster. As long as it is good enough to hold zero on my .308 and allows me to get better at shooting I will be happy.

You should be fine until you're ready to shoot past 600yds with that.

The SS 3-9x42 is a totally different breed of scope compared to the Nikon Monarch. Optically the Monarchs do not compete with the new SS scopes. The SS brand has always been knows for the $300 fixed power offerings. In the past 1+ years we have made new additions to the SS line with totally revamped and much higher quality options. The 3-9x42 was the first introduction and has really taken off. It’s biggest struggle was educating people this new SS scope is NOT the same quality as the previous $300 SS scopes.

The SS 3-9 has a First focal plane Mil Dot range finding reticle(gets larger and smaller in size in relation to the magnification). Adjustments are in mils matching the reticle. Target knobs are exposed for making quick adjustments. This is a tactical situation geared scope. Can be used for hunting but features are geared for the "tactical" shooter. Most of these features most people will never use but the optics alone would make it an easy choice over its competition.

Then when you consider this group buy price you have found it’s a no brainer!

It would be way too high. I'd buy this kit then sell that mount for $175 then get some Talley light weight mounts for $45.

I was wondering if you would chime in here - I didn't realize your screen name was SWFA, though it was something else.

Im going back and forth. Its a great buy, but it really is "too much" scope for what I do at this point. Do I go for the practical choice or the great deal?

So "low" on a one piece mount not quite as low as standard rings I guess?
