  • 20" 6.8 SPC upper receiver

Who makes a good upper in 6.8 SPC w/ a 20" barrel? Only place I have found with decent options are Model 1. Anybody dealt with them before?

Key wants/needs are chrome lined barrel, chromed BCG, flat top, and free float hand guard. It will misty be used for hog hunting.

Anybody make a gas piston model in this caliber?

I don't know what to look for or what to get as far as front gas block/sights or rear sights are concerned. I don't even know that I want iron sights because I want to put a good scope on it.

OR, is there a better option based on what I want? I want to stay AR-15 platform but larger caliber than the .223 I have now. I also want something that isn't a caliber that is limited to hand loads only. As cool as some of those are I want to keep it simple. Any input guys?

Why a 20" barrel? I believe i read some where long ago that the 6.8 was originally designed to be used w/ a 16" barrel or less. And the gains over 18" where very minimal. It's been a couple of years since i wanted to build one.

And it sounds like you need to build the upper your self. I would would do the 18" Noveske SPR barrel, Vltor A3 upper w/ m4 feed ramps and a PRI Gen III free float. That was going to be my build but i built a 6.5 instead. But it's your gun do what ever you want.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

Why 20"? Honestly, just because I think it looks cooler, especially with a bad ass looking muzzle brake, no other reason. I've thought about building one but haven't figured out all the nitty gritty on what to get and where to buy from.

Then get a 16" w/ a suppressor, lol. But if thats what you want then go for it. Did a quick google search and there are a few 20" barrels out there. I would still build it my self. Like 1 said the before the 6.8 was build to be use for 16" barrels. So your options are limited for 20".

I could go with a shorter barrel and a longer muzzle brake. I just think the longer ones look better with a non-railed full length hand guard. I was thinking about building it pending the cost difference.

I have bought a lot of stuff from Model 1 with no problems but have always bought from them at the gun shows, I hear their wait time is long if you buy online.....
They sell the complete uppers and also the barrel and parts separately at the shows.

Search 68forums.com. Most people go with Bison or AR Performance. Both have a few month backlog but are considered the best out there. I am probably going to go with a CMMG LE upper.
Stay away from Model 1 and Stag. They are using the old specs and do not have M4 feed ramps

I'm with Diesel. I read up quite a bit on the 6.8 and it was definitely designed to use the 16" barrel. You won't gain a whole lot out of the extra length, if anything.

Well it's not going to hurt anything with a longer barrel will it? Other than being more expensive?

weighs more and harder to maneuver in thick cover

Well that's more about me and not the rifle itself and how it performs. I don't mind heavy guns.

7.62 x 39mm makes a good hog gun and is way cheaper to shoot.....

I stalked around a hog hunt with my 20inch a2. Trust me man you want a 16inch and a collapsible stock. The a2 i found cumbersome getting in and out the truck. It kept snagging branches when ridding the 4 wheeler, along with walking down the game trails. 6.8 has plenty of knock down in a 16 inch. Might as well make the other aspects of hunting less annoying.

I cant remember exactly what it was, but I read up about it, and something turned me away from wanting to make an AR based rifle in this caliber. I'm sure it'll come to me....

i dont know about the 7.62x39 but very few parts have to change out if you want to change from a 6.8 to 5.56. Also the bullet selection on the 6.8 is starting to look pretty good, especially hunting rounds.

The 6.8 was designed around a 14.5" barrel for the special forces. Politics got in the way so the Army didnt pick it up like they said they would but its a great hunting round.

Choose your upper from that chart, its exactly what you need to know.
