Well I used up one of my group buy lowers putting this together:
Spike's M4 upper, 16" 1:7 mid-length with M16 BCG and ST buffer. I found this complete upper on M4Carbine NIB for $400 a few months back but didn't have a use for it yet.
Total build price:
Upper: $400
GB Lower & Parts: $88
Mil Buffer tube & Spring: $20
Carbine stock and A2 handle were sitting in a box gathering dust
Not bad for $508, but I'm sure with the next group buys it can be done much cheaper. I was planning on keeping this rifle simple with iron sights, but I have been itching to pickup a 1-4x scope, so who knows.
Quick review:
My three GB lowers came out nice, and the trigger with the DPMS kit isn't half bad after it has broken in some. Definitely no complaints for the price, thanks again CJ for all the work.
This is the first time I have messed with a spikes upper and I am really impressed. This upper is around $500 on the street and it is a really nice piece and probably worth every penny. The BCG looks to be well done, it is MPI, and the bolt, gas key, and extractor are all correct. The barrel finish is very well done and it is completely coated without the FSB in place. The chrome lining in the chamber and barrel looks nice and a quick test showed it to be just a hair short of 1:7. The only flaw was a nic on the shell deflector from when it was test fired.
The finish on the Spikes upper is darker and a little smoother compared to the lower, so the match isn't all that great. (not a big deal IMO) The overall fit between the upper and lower is good, not great, but not bad either.
