Sitting here watching HDNet and one of their live shows is on from 1991. I don't get it. Why were they ever so big? I can barely understand what Mick Jagger is saying. I think they had maybe one or two actually good songs. The rest just blow.

Sympathy for the Devil is epic, and there might be one other that seemed good. The rest of their songs blow.

Did they just ride the coattails of the Beatles?


My son is dancing to the music though.....he is 1.

Hell no, they didn't just ride the coattails of the Beatles. They rocked in the Brian Jones days, then the rocked in the Mick Taylor days. Honestly, though, I don't want to write thirty paragraphs explaining musical context. Just read the wikipedia article, and start digging through their albums. You'll get it.

Shiiiiit...Honky Tonk Women, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Gimmee Shelter, and on and on. They were the "bad boys" and the Beatles were the "good boys".

Let it Bleed is a good album, Some Girls is a good album, Sticky Fingers is a good album. They've got lots of great albums.

As for songs - Miss You, Let it Bleed, Beast of Burden, Shattered, Start Me Up, Time is on My Side, Good Times, Bad Times,
Susie Q, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Sister Morphine, Bitch, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Under My Thumb, I'm Alright, Good Time Women, etc.


They will always be among the best rock and roll bands ever, IMO. I can sit down with a 12 pack, blast some Stones, and it takes me to a completely different place.

i understand your point but that is not where I am coming from. That type of music is awful to me. The drown of the way it sounds is actually irritating.

I enjoy the old bands. Back when it was really about having fun and Rock and Roll was at its best. I will listen to classic rock before I ever listen to anything from when I was growing up ( I am 28). I grew up on 92.5. I think older folks don't realize my generation and more still love all the old stuff. I have heard the DJ's on 92.5 act so surprised when they see people my age at their events.

As for the Stones. I picked up their 40 licks greatest hits about 5 years ago. It was OK to me. It didn't blow me away as some other greatest hits from other bands. I was disappointed in a way. I know greatest hits albums don't tell the full story of a group, but I like to use them as windows into a group to see if I want to venture further.

Maybe I just need to listen to that album a little more. Maybe pick up some of their albums to understand it.

There's your problem. Again, the musical context of their respective albums needs to be taken into consideration. Listen to them separately, and then see if you don't feel a little better about them. Try Sticky Fingers, Goat's Head Soup, Their Satanic Majesties Request, and Girls! Girls! Girls! for starters, and see if that doesn't blow your skirt up. If you want some good live action, check out the Gimme Shelter! documentary, and the Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out live album.

I'm not a big fan of live albums, but Exile on Main St is good, and so is Got Live if you Want It.

The concept of the album as something greater than the sum of its parts is dead to most people, and certainly to the record industry.

I have a really odd taste in music. Some music is good to some people and not to others.

They produced real rock and roll and weren't dirty hippies during the Vietnam War. It was something you could play over there that would help with morale and scare the crap out of the locals if you blared it loud enough.
