Will watch.
I do not know why, but I have always had an odd infatuation with the war in Vietnam from a social perspective, rather than a military one.Originally posted by lincolnboyAfter watching Games of Thrones, makes me glad i was not born in those years.

I cannot wait to watch this. I have a lot of Vietnamese friends, and their stories about fleeing after the war are heart wrenching to put it mildly.
The south Vietnamese had no money or means to leave. What little money they did have saved were stolen by scammers. One of my friends paid two people on different occasions to boat them out, only to have them take their money and not show.
Once you did find a "boat" you were at risk of being shot dead by communists or raided by pirates. One of my best friends was really young but remembers everything well. People were heading into the open ocean on homemade rafts and no supplies. People were dying of dehydration on the boats. Pirates took everything of value.
It was so risky heading out to sea, it was usually just the husband and sons that went, leaving their wives and other kids behind. For most of them it took 10+ plus years before they could immigrate their families over.
I could not imagine heading to open waters on a homemade raft, with nothing but the sun to navigate, and limited food and water.

After spending a month in South Vietnam, and seeing how warmly they view Americans, is really touching. They will never forget what we sacrificed for them.
Shit, to get as many South Vietnamese on our vessels as possible, we dumped a shit ton of tanks, helicopters, & planes into the Pacific to make room.
I really enjoyed my time there, and can't wait to go back. I want to stay for a full year next time.

I happened to catch a late night episode of Tavis Smiley on PBS a couple nights back. He interviewed the filmmaker, it was pretty interesting. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/...dy/?show=22606
She talked about how the US Ambassador in Saigon refused to leave when they sent the chopper to get him specifically. He wouldn't leave until they flew out as many Vietnamese as possible and would be the last to go. That's fucking awesome. Sounds like over 100,000 Vietnamese Americans have him to thank.
She also said that 99% of the movie is the 24 hours after the fall of Saigon. Not how the war started or ended, just the evacuation. So it should be really unique in that aspect.

I just got home from watching this, great film. It really hit close to home for me. Without this event, and the actions of everyone serving in Vietnam, I wouldn't have met my wife or best friend.
It was heartwarming and heroic, yet heartbreaking and tragic. Many people broke the law, violated direct orders and risked their lives to do the right thing and evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible. Almost 80,000 people saved in 18 hours, yet so many left behind.
Everyone should support this film and learn more about these amazing series of events. I've heard the stories from friends and family for years, it was nice seeing actual footage and hearing the story told from different perspectives.
