Godzilla' director Gareth Edwards to direct 'Star Wars' spinoff film

Gareth Edwards has skyrocketed all the way to a galaxy far, far away. The "Godzilla" director will make the first stand-alone "Star Wars" film after J.J. Abrams' "Episode VII."

Edwards' movie will open December 16, 2016, a year after "Episode VII" is due out. Disney and Lucasfilm plan to release a new "Star Wars" film each year, claiming prime real estate in the holiday season. Some of those will follow the originals, while others will be spin-offs, investigating bit characters and new characters in greater depth.

No plot details were given for the film, and the cast remains a secret. It would stand to reason that at least some of the new members of the "Episode VII" cast, led by Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, could appear in the film.

"Godzilla," which has grossed more than $200 million in its first week of release, is Edwards' second film, and his first with a real budget. He previously directed the "Monsters," a 2010 release made for $500,000.

Edwards is still attached to direct a sequel to "Godzilla," but that is long into the future. Legendary CEO Thomas Tull took the unusual step of reminding people of that Thursday, while also congratulating Edwards.

"Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors," Tull said in a statement. "The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth's imprint on the Star Wars universe."

Awesome. About god damn time. Such a fucking HUGE galaxy with so much content. . .. it doesn't always have to be jedi, sith, empire, rebels, republic, separatists. . .. .

The big question is. . . when the fuck will we see a tv series.

The upcoming “Star Wars” standalone film, “Rogue One,” will follow a group trying to steal the Death Star plans, it was revealed at Sunday’s Star Wars Celebration.

“A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One,” the official Star Wars account tweeted on Sunday while special teaser footage was shown at the event.

The film will take place before Episode IV.

The news was revealed at a panel with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm VP of development Kiri Hart and spinoff director Gareth Edwards.

There is definitely a ton of material out there for new movies. I have ready probably 30+ books that follow peripheral characters and shadow some of the primary movie story lines. I especially enjoyed the X-Wing book series.

With the star wars environment and source material, he would be contained enough to do a decent enough script (not direct), especially since it would have so many ghost writers and lore nerds scrubbing the script before it even made it to filming. He seems to fail when given free rein, and not being able to ground the script with a knowledgeable subject

Cantina tv show.....I'd watch a few episodes of that. Probably end up more of a drama than sci fi, though, and likely have the feel of Deep Space Nine.

They need to follow the Yuuzhan Vong story. Was the first time that the jedi/new republic were completely outmatched.

This whole premise sounds good to me. I'm actually happy that they aren't following any pre-established expanded universe stuff. Bring on the fresh blood and new ideas.

yes there is a trilogy, but it also sounds like the are going to do spin off movies, similar to what marvel is doing with the avengers
