  • Captain America 3

This is going to be a huge mistake on Warner Brothers part if they don't back down. The Superman/Batman movie is already looking like it is going to be a huge pile of shit, just like pretty much every other movie Zach Snyder has touched. If Bale and Nolan were returning it might be a different story.

Until now, the identity of the Marvel film set to open on May 6, 2016, has been kept secret; Marvel Studios and Disney claimed the date first before Warner Bros. slotted the next "Superman" installment for the same weekend.

The mystery has been solved -- the untitled Marvel Studios tentpole that Warner Bros.' Batman and Superman movie will go up against on May 6, 2016, is Captain America 3, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

That's the plan, anyway, creating the biggest superhero box office showdown in history. (Marvel Studios and parent company Disney staked out the date first.) Shooting schedules and postproduction could always impact the current blueprint, however. Also, Marvel and Disney have a second untitled movie scheduled to open that summer on July 8, so there is wiggle room.

Marvel films have all but owned the first weekend of summer for the past decade to enormous success, so all of Hollywood was surprised when Warner Bros. announced in January that it would open Batman-Superman on May 6, 2016 as well.

Batman-Superman stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill once again as Superman. It was originally supposed to hit theaters in summer 2015, but its release was pushed back nearly a year. There's no doubt that Warner Bros. is hoping to replicate the blockbuster returns Marvel has enjoyed with its multihero Avengers universe.

This week, when promoting the upcoming sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige threw down the gauntlet, saying he had no plans to move off the May 6 date. He still wouldn't reveal the identity of the film; however, insiders confirm it will indeed be Captain America 3. The world premiere of Winter Soldier is Thursday in Hollywood.

Warner Bros. may have been waiting to see what the Marvel title was before considering a date change for Batman-Superman, if the studio blinks. There are still weekends available that summer, including the first two after Captain America 3 and Batman-Superman are set to open. Zack Snyder begins shooting Batman-Superman in the coming weeks.

Veteran box office observers doubt that the two films will ultimately open opposite each other.

Marvel and Disney are incredibly high on Captain America 2, which opens in north America on April 4 and is garnering huge interest, according to prerelease tracking. They believe Winter Soldier, with Chris Evans returning in the title role, will benefit from the same halo effect from The Avengers that Iron Man 3 and sequel Thor: The Dark World enjoyed, as well as firmly establishing Captain America as a standalone franchise.
Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo directed Winter Soldier and are in talks to return for Captain America 3.

The first, Captain America: The First Avenger, took in $371 million worldwide, compared to $668 million for Man of Steel. However, Winter Soldier has a shot at matching the $641 million grossed worldwide by fellow Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World late last year.

LOL, Batman Superman doesn't have a chance, and that saddens me. There is so much potential, but that will most likely be turned into a steaming pile of shit. I will keep hope, hold low expectations, that just maybe, I might be impressed. But I won't hold my breath.

Side note, Marvel owns right now, this does make me happy for Stan Lee to see all the glory in his late years. From what I have seen of him he appears to be a great man.

Agreed. Not only does Marvel have a shit ton more momentum(they'll have what, 11 or 12 movies in their cannon by that point, compared to ONE that wasn't even very good?), but god, everything I read about this new deal looks like bad decision on top of bad decision. The dumbest thing about it all, is this combo is the best chance WB has at even even entering the same SPORT as what Marvel is playing at right now, and they are completely botching it at every fucking turn. It's almost sickening watching them squander their only shot.

Disney just needs to buy DC. It will happen one day.

Marvel/Disney is so far ahead of DC/WB. I frankly don't think DC has a big enough cache of characters to compete. Their ace in the hole is Batman and that only works once per generation. Marvel can keep cranking out great character based movies for at least another decade and still have more to produce.

It's really not even a question who is going to win this war.

I think DC has enough characters to compete, but the movie execs keep screwing it up.

And I am quite sure marvel is not worried about any "war" for supremacy in comic book movies. Marvel's is far ahead at this point.

Short of a Flash or WW movie, I can't think of another name that would garner the attention a movie would need. Marvel has created a trust with the average movie goer. You kind of know what your getting. DC can't afford to make a movie with a A- or B character from their universe. That's where I categorize Ant man but he is getting a movie and it will probably be good. Just like this guardian of the galaxy movie.

You are right. Marvel is like the big brother that watch his little brother play Tball and gives him a pat on the head when the little guy gets a base hit.

Has Marvel ever been worried? Their characters have always had better storylines.

I don't even know anything about those characters, but the preview alone has me pretty excited for that to come out. It looks like it is going to be awesome.

Really the only misstep Marvel has taken so far was the lousy directing job on Iron Man 2. That movies plot looked like swiss cheese. It seems like their quality is actually increasing(although the first Iron Man is still the best). I credit that to Joss. He can put large ensembles together and has proven it time and time again.

Last i read WB is pulling their release to the end of April for batman/superman. They're stupid to try to compete in the same weekend against a marvel movie. DC has no shot of competing with marvel especially with the cluster fuck their next movie is going to turn into. Bale/Nolan had a good thing going for the batman franchise but I don't that that version would've worked with the man of steel universe.

Give it like 4 more years. Most of the major comic arcs are being set up and after those are done there won't be anything else to use.

Robert Downey Jr has said he's not doing Iron Man any more after Avengers 2, so that would fit there.

From what I'm hearing, Marvel seems to value actor only up to X dollars, and doesn't want to pay anymore than that. If true, that may be their fall is if they don't want to pay the actors that are helping to create these characters we like.
