    Cosmos: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY

Anyone else looking forward to this?

I was a big fan of Sagan's original Cosmos as a kid and I still have all the episodes on DVD.

    From Wiki:
Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey is an upcoming American documentary television series. It is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was presented by Carl Sagan. The new series' presenter will be Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Did no one watch this? *tear*

It was a great introduction to the series. There wasn't much for me to learn from this first ep. but the show looks promising, and I too have a man crush on NDT. That last bit was awesome, you can tell he is really into what he does.

I watched it and liked it, not that I thought I wouldn't.

A friend and I were messaging each other while watching. Here were my initial thoughts during ep 1

                1. the density of the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt is really annoying me
                2. the solar system overview reminds me of the intro to Star Trek: Voyager. I like.
                3. I know they have to dramatize things like this for most people, but showing Voyager screaming through clouds (?) like an airplane or something is also annoying.
                4. Going from the local group to the supercluster... it's an animated version of Hubble Deep Field photo. Incredible.
                5. I think the jump from the universe to the multiverse (when it goes from empirical to theoretical) probably has most people's eyes glazing over.
                6. Cosmic calendar = Fun. Always mind blowing. Every time. Any sense of scale you might have had in life is shattered when you being learning about astronomy and cosmology.
                7. NDT needs more turtleneck.

My little complaints don't amount to much. In the end it's awesome. It's a high level primer that has potential to ignite a passion for STEM in a new generation, and that is something I will always always always fully support. Looking forward to next week.

Recorded it, but haven't watched it yet. Need a controlled environment to watch stuff like that.

I hope it does inspire. I really enjoyed what I got to see of it. I'm a fan of NDT too. I'd love to see more kids get into STEM & maybe this will inspire. I'll try to remember to ask my students tomorrow if any of them watched.

Got around to watching the first episode last night and did so without having a panic attack, so that was a plus. I've always been very intrigued, but never been able to enjoy the subject. Even had to drop Astronomy in college two weeks in. That being said, after seeing the cosmic calendar, I've never felt so insignificant.

Why does the subject of astronomy give you panic attacks?

My wife and I are really enjoying it. NDT is a bad mofo, and I like the "starship of the mind" concept. It's always nice when good TV can stretch your perspective. Gotta take a break from zombies and the irritainment of watching stupid people be stupid on camera.
