As it turns out, Kevin Smith’s Tusk is going to give us something besides crippling nightmares of Justin Long wearing a walrus suit.

The indie director claims, on his latest Hollywood Babble-On podcast, that the mere existence of Tusk got Kevin Smith the financing that he needed for Clerks 3. Smith begins the latest podcast attacking his audience (playfully) about not supporting the movie. "Tusk opened about as poorly as a movie can open," Smith admitted. But the director quickly found the silver lining in the financial disaster, stating:

Everything in my life would suck right now if I hadn’t made that movie. I’m back in movies now. I’ve got three lined up, and this is the fucking grand news. Tusk was the absolute bridge to Clerks 3. Because of Tusk, I got my financing for Clerks 3. … It was Tusk. It was people going ‘Holy Fuck! What else do you have?’ And I was like, ‘Clerks 3.’ Done. So everybody that’s like, ‘He failed, he failed,’ thank you I failed into Clerks 3."

Kevin Smith has been beating the drum for Clerks 3 for a while now. He recently told us that the screenplay for it is finished. And yet, in that strange announcement, he describes the screenplay as "the Empire Strikes Back of what’s now become the Clerk Trilogy." Even though this is the third part, which should make it the Return of the Jedi of the trilogy. Right? Is this stoner math? Still, he says that he’s ready to go back to New Jersey "for the last time," so there’s going to be some closure to the storyline.

You can’t tell the story of Kevin Smith without referring heavily to Clerks. It is the movie that kick-started Smith’s career as a writer-director, and while many will argue about how far Smith has come since the early days of the indie-talker-comedy, there’s no denying the impact that Clerks had on the industry and its rabid audience.

Smith, of course, already returned that that universe for Clerks 2.

What could possibly happen in Clerks 3? The convenience store was open once again at the end of Clerks 2. But knowing Smith’s mind, the possibilities are endless. So long as they don’t involve a walrus suit.

It's been nearly twenty years to the day since Kevin Smith made his theatrical debut with Clerks. And apparently the New Jersey born-and-raised director feels this is the perfect time to start dropping details on the long-teased Clerks III.

Recently on Smith's podcast Smodcast (via Movie Pilot), he invited on Jeff Anderson, who played Randal Graves in Clerks, and the two got to talking about the evolving Clerks trilogy. After joking that Smith has touted all kinds of spin-offs for the indie film (including a Broadway play), Anderson said of Clerks III:

"I like the script. It’s being introduced to these characters that are friends. Friends of mine. Friends of ours. Whether or not I was going to do the movie, I wanted to read the script. Just for closure for myself! Fuck the fans, I just wanna' know! Yeah, it’s a very different movie and that’s what I like about it. Clerks II was a very different movie from 1, but it wasn’t that different. Clerks III . . . still not that different, but different in a different way. Different, different, different, different. Clerks to me was a gritty movie. Clerks II became this brighter movie. Clerks III to me feels somewhere between 1 and 2. It feels a little gritty and we go back to the beginning stages, but we do see the progression."

Okay, so Clerks III is different from the other movies, but not that different. Anderson declined to give any plot points of the upcoming film. However, he did confirm that he will return to reprise the role of Randal. As for Smith, he revealed one way the third installment of the Clerks trilogy won't be all that different from Clerks: It'll be in black and white. Well, the first ten minutes will be anyway.

Beyond that, expect Jay and Silent Bob to strike back yet again, appearing in Clerks III, roundabout as much as they did in Clerks

and Clerks II. The only other clue Smith offered about Clerks III's story was this:

"I like where [the story] fucking goes so much. It’s my favorite soap opera now. It’s kinda like The Empire Strikes Back of the Clerks movies. It doesn’t tell the middle story, but it has that kinda feeling."

Kevin Smith, quick tip--be careful about mentioning The Empire Strikes Back. Lucasfilm is a bit territorial.

As to when fans might expect to see Clerks III, /Film notes that Smith hopes to shoot in June of 2015. Unclear is whether he will complete his True North trilogy before then. Its first installment, Tusk just hit theaters, and he is current shooting its second, Yoga Hosers. The third is Moose Jaws; when it'll shoot is currently unclear.

It's been nearly twenty years to the day since Kevin Smith made his theatrical debut with Clerks. And apparently the New Jersey born-and-raised director feels this is the perfect time to start dropping details on the long-rumored Clerks III.
