Deets is based on Bose Ikerd, also buried in Weatherford. Ikerd worked for Goodnight for years and their families are close to this day. Goodnight wrote this for Ikerd's grave:
"Bose Ikard served with me four years on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, never shirked a duty or disobeyed an order, rode with me in many stampedes, participated in three engagements with Comanches, splendid behavior."
You might recall a similar epitaph in Lonesome Dove.
When I retired, the PD gave me a pocket watch engraved with the Latin phrase on the door that Gus had at the Hat Creek Cattle Co. "Uva uvam viviendo varia fit". Loosely translated it says that a grape changes after living life with grapes (a metaphor for a man's life).
I think I've read pretty much everything Mr. McMurtry has written. Damned good material.Comment
