I really disliked it. Whatever place creatively Baz Luhrmann went to when he made Moulin Rouge is where he's stuck. All the component pieces, including everyone's acting, was good, but the whole thing felt so stiff and forced, I just didn't enjoy it. It seemed far more predicated on being stunning visually, than anything else, to the detriment of the film. It was really messy.ZOMBIE REAGAN FOR PRESIDENT 2016!!! heh

I didn't dislike it, but I mostly agree with Yale, though I'd compare the opening to the overdone first 15 minutes of Romeo and Juliet. The rap music, though well placed, annoyed me. I thought it was well done in Django Unchained as an original story, but thought they should have stuck with some more serious jazz for the soundtrack of such a pillar of literature. God I want that yellow Duesenberg. I probably won't buy it when it comes out on bluray or anything. And I think Leo's performance in Django Unchained was far greater. Still a moving story that is well told, and an overall good movie. My expectations were also extremely high going on, so I'm sure a second viewing is in order.

I hate old fucken music, so the mixing of the old shit with bass and a beat was bad ass, my wife and I were almost dancing in our seats, where all the old fucks around us were saying so much for the music and walking out mid movie!
I thought the acting of the main 3, was all pretty damn good, and I haven't read the book in 20 years, but I thought from what I remember it was well protrayed without being so stuck in the 20s that it wasn't original in it's own way.
Its the best "book" movie I've ever seen. That said I didn't read the Twilight stuff or Hunger Games and loved all those movies too. I usually can't read a book AFTER I see the movie though. Haha

Sex with an Asian woman is great, but 30 minutes later you're horny again.

Watched it for the first time Saturday night with the kids, after reading this thread it made me worry but then sense on the new music. It helped pull them in. It made me happy to see them interested in one of my favorite books and even has gotten one to want to read Lord of the Flies (another one of my favorites from childhood). It took a bit of adjustment when hearing Gatsby and not seeing Robert Redford honestly. Watching it again now with momma and I am enjoying it more.
