You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with as solid a set of back-to-back films, especially in the '90s, as the Farrelly brothers had with Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin and There's Something About Mary. The last decade hasn't seen the pair field any great hits, but because of those three films alone, people do still hold out hope they can bottle lightning once again. And now it's looking like in order to do just that, they'll have to head back to the film that started their career.
According to Coming Soon, not only is a sequel to Dumb & Dumber (note the Farrelly's weren't involved with the film's animated spin-off TV show or its prequel, Dumb and Dumberer) in the works, it's actually setting up for a September production with original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both in talks to return as Lloyd and Harry respectively.
Of course, the Farrelly brothers have made big talk like this in the past. This particular nugget of news came to light after comments the brothers made at the press junket for their latest film, The Three Stooges, a movie that was no stranger to the brother's grand ambitions. So considering that junket saw press interviewing Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos as Larry, Curly and Moe instead of the original Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benecio del Toro the Farrellys tried to cast, we're not going to hold our breath that they can get Carrey and Daniels to return any time soon.
Granted, it would probably net a hefty pay day for all involved if they did, but money isn't always the main motivator to bring already big stars back to old roles. Both Carrey and Daniels have had the kind of consistent work over their careers that doesn't find either clamoring for roles they don't need to take, and in particular the latter has just landed the rather hefty gig as anchoring Aaron Sorkin's new HBO show. Is playing a buffoon and driving around on mopeds going to be enough for Daniels these days? Time will tell, but we're not betting on it.
But even if it does happen, does anyone really want it to? Or has the window for that sequel long closed?
