First off the new ACL (Moody Theater) is a top notch venue. There are like 2500 seats and not a bad one in the house. There are also bars conveniently located around all the seating areas. With a state of the art sound and light system it makes it superb.
Now on for the show. Joe Bonamassa is a blues man but first and foremost a straight up hardcore rocker (aka Bloodline). He jammed for a solid 2 1/2 hours and rarely let up. He was joined on stage with a special guest appearance by Eric Johnson and they did two songs together which was amazing- Eric hasn't lost a bit since the last time I saw him some 20yrs ago.
The highlight was the acoustic solo bit he did for 10 minutes without the band- the dude can just flat pick his ass off. He is an amazing guitarist.
The show ended with a 6minute encore which was his signature guitar hero tribute jam morph of 5 songs- YardBird’s -Shapes of Things, Wille Dixon/Howling Wolf/Jeff Beck’s -Ain’t Superstitious, Sabbath’s- Paranoid, Zeppelin’s Dazed and Confused and ZZ Top’s Just Got Paid- very tasty.
I couldn't tell if people where just blown away or they didn't grasp the greatness they had just witnessed. Crowd was pretty subdued for a hard rocking performance that was given. Maybe it was just the upscale crowd that wanted to be seen or said they had been to show.
Left there and headed to 6th street for more live music by local unknown bands. The level of talent down there playing locally is so great.
