The Rum Diary is is a Novel by Hunter S. Thompson, like all of his works, they are based upon true events that he covered as a reporter, but he uses an invented character to re-tell the events with the freedom of embellishing everything that happened. Just like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and almost all of this books.

The amount of truth, even from Thompson's own recollection, is hard to decipher because of the amount of drugs and alcohol consumed when he was reporting. Typically even he didn't know how much he made up versus how much actually happened as the years went on.
