The Thing is a better movie if you havent seen the "first" one. It does suffer some since this started life as a re-imaging. As a Prequel it seems to the first justice (although it does suffer from more-itis a little bit). The movie ramps up in speed quite nicely, compared to the first one. It has some good suspense and surprise, enough that I jumped once or twice. SFX are very good, which was concern since bad CG can kill a movie for me, and since the "first" has such awesome "real" effects

Keep in mind that the "first one" with Kurt Russel is also a remake.
