Well, it was decent, but not great. The plot worked much better in book format. It seemed disjointed, and the the director didn't seem to have much vision. Lots of static shots that seemed to never end, which usually doesn't bother me, but the dialogue in these shots was purely plot points and not colorful enough to be interesting. Way too much exposition for far too little payoff. If I hadn't read the book, I think I would have had a hard time understanding many of the characters motivations. The book had a somewhat frenzied "everything can go completely wrong at any second" feel to it, the movie didn't. The actors did the best they could with what they were given. Amber Heard was stunningly gorgeous, Depp was on point, and Giovanni Ribisi stole every scene he was in.

Also, I may be a bit harsh in my critique. I've been waiting over 2 years for this movie to come out, so there was no way it was going to live up to expectations. A second viewing is in order.

I haven't read the book, so maybe that would change it, but I won't be watching the movie again. Unremarkable, mildly entertaining...
One of those "what's the point?" movies.
It had a big "this seems to be a small snapshot (or many disjointed smaller snapshots haphazardly thrown together into a bigger snapshot) of a much larger story, but I know nothing of the events leading up to this or the events after so, wow, this sucks." feel to it and I know that's exactly the case, but it doesn't work for this movie.

Knowing your taste, you'd probably really like the book. I figured this had the best shot of being the only other thing of HSTs that would translate well to the screen but I guess I was wrong. I really think a lot of it had to do with the director, though.
If they could somehow combine the title story of The Great Shark Hunt and The Curse of Lono, that would be worth seeing.

I should spent the $15 on HST stuff at half price books instead.

Hahaha, good luck finding ANYthing by him at HPB. I've seen maybe 2 of his books there in the last 3 or 4 years, and I'm in there pretty often, and always look, even though I'm at the point I've read almost his entire library. If you haven't read anything, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is #1, then Hells Angels, The Rum Diary, then The Great Shark Hunt. You might want to read HA first, since it is his first book and sort of sets a tone for him becoming a total outlaw in FAL...."Fictional" as the rest of his books may or may not be..

I actually meant to bring this TTT. A second viewing since it came out on DVD and I think I was overtly harsh in my earlier criticisms. Pretty decent. It isn't the book, but that is fine. Just a case of me even knowing my expectations were too high going in but not being able to see past them.
