We were soildiers was a good movie too. Some of the stuff in the film did not happen, Like the big rush with the helo at the end. But still a good war movie, the book "We were soldiers once, and young" was better.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is set during the Civil War and directly affected the plot.

What about "Gettysburg". I always thought that was a damn good civil war era film.

                IMO the list should go..

                1. Band of Brothers
                2. The Pacific
                3. Saving Private Ryan
                4. Glory
                5. The longest day
                6. Tora Tora
                7. Gettysburg
                8. Platoon
                9. Full Metal Jacket
                10. A Bridge too far

There's been alot of great war movies, actually I'd LOVE to see a miniseries in the styling of Band of Brothers about the Civil War. Go through all the battles from start to finish, have half of it be about the north, half about the south, and follow it based on a division that they have the most stuff written about/and or personal letters from soldiers. I'm a huge war buff, and i'm burnt out on WWII movies. Civil war hasnt been done enough IMO.

If we are going that far out then I have to nominate John Adams. I didn't really want to get into it but after watching it for 10 minutes I was hooked, a recurring trend on HBO shows.

I was going to recommend this also. John Adams is by far the best movie/series/documentary ever made on US revolutionary war.

Gone With the Wind set the bar very high for this genre. I'd like to see something that went more in depth into Lee and Grant's personal lives. It'd be really tough to do anything without it being called a western or being compared to one of the greatest films of all time.

                        No Patton?

I always liked The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare, both are from the 60s.

You're joking, right? Gone with the Wind was NOT a war movie. It just happens to be based in the same timeframe as the war. Something like Cold Mountain would be along the same genre as Gone with the Wind, (but obviously not on the same scale).

After thinking about it, there was a miniseries called the north and south with patrick swayze in it.. i barely remember it, i havent seen it since the 80s, and also the red badge of courage is pretty good for a 50s movie, the book was one of my favorites as a kid growing up.

                              Tour of Duty.

Short lived TV series looking at the Vietnam war. The first season was pretty good given their low budget. They had no problems killing off main characters, too, which gave a real sense of consequence in what was portrayed. The series took a wrong turn in the second season, and I didn't find it as interesting - canceled after the third season.
