I've always respected him as one of the old-school outlaw country artists and have been wanting to catch one of his shows before he dies. My friends were opening up for him last night and they invited me to come hang out.

What a piece of shit show. It's obvious that he's just doing it for the paychecks these days (allegedly to cover a bad gambling habit). His kid plays lead, and puts ZERO effort into his playing. He was the definition of going through the motions. The rest of the band were pretty good and decent guys.

While I do respect him as a singer/songwriter, I was never into all his bullshit racist crap. I'll admit I found a degree of humor in it when I was younger, but now I think it's just stupid. He has this big following of bikers and rednecks that like all that shit, but he doesn't play it anymore and sticks to all covers and his few mainstream hits. I'd give him a little more credit if he stuck to his guns and played his own shit, whether people liked it or not.

He opened with a song I couldn't recognize. He sounds straight-up elderly (probably appropriate given the fact that he's almost 72yrs old). From there, he went into Toby Keith's "How do you like me now". I tried to get a pic of the biker standing up with both middle fingers raised, head-banging to it, but he was too far away. He wrapped that song up and went into an awful version of Uncle Kracker's "Follow Me". That's when we left.

He played for exactly 1hr and walked off. No encore. Worth the $35 ticket?? Fuck no. Even though I only stayed for 2.5 songs, a couple of buddies hung around and came back with tears of laughter in their eyes telling of other songs he butchered.

What a disappointment. I had a blast hanging out and can now say that I've seen him, but for others out there hoping to see him and catch a glimpse of what he used to be, save your money. At least he was entertaining to look at.

I feel bad for the old guys. There's no soul left in them for the shows, but they just don't fade away.

He's been pretty horrendous for the past 20 years. It's been the same show with the same dialog since he was playing at my mom's bar in the late 80's.

I don't know if I was just too young to really understand, but I remember seeing him several times as a kid, and he didn't seem that bad. But when I saw him as an adult, I was completely taken aback by how hateful he was.
He spews some vile shit, but he pretty much hates everyone.

I saw him play about 10 years ago at Billy Bob's, played all his own material. Actually he wasn't bad. He had a black guitar player so every song that had the N word in it would miss a lyric when that part came around. He would sing the entire song but skip that one word, I thought it was pretty damn funny.

He's been pissed ever since Glen Campbell did "Rhinestone Cowboy". Some of DAC's lyrics even mention him being the "original" rhinestone cowboy. He's bitter, alright.

It was my understanding he wrote all that racist stuff as a joke to see who he could piss off. I also heard his drummer was black when he released that album however long ago it was. Don't know if that is true or not, but most of his hits (racists and not) seemed to be geared at pushing the envelope and being politically incorrect. That is what I always got from them, and why I liked him. Sucks he is now putting on mediocre shows. Well, you just saved me money because he is one person I would have liked to see in concert before this review, so thanks!

On a another note, Willie Nelson still puts on a good show. Pretty much him and guitar with his band, nothing fancy. Saw him perform for a small crowd of a few hundred a few years ago at a small college. No doubt he is doing shows like that to pay off the IRS, but his show was exaclty what I expected of Willie; him playing a guitar. Billy Joe Shaver was the opening act, and as old as he is he still puts on a good show as well.

I saw a concert video and he had a black drummer... Not sure if he was the regular guy or a house band member though.
